The Reel is great for: morning coffee. Afternoon tea. Free wifi. Free music sessions in the evening. Great music shop. Good music tuition.

I stopped by there in the morning for a coffee, and was delighted to find that The Reel seemed to be a very fine venue for lunch, music, a drink or whatever one seemed to want at almost whatever time of day it happened to be. Regretting slightly that I was only there for a coffee, and the cappuccino was... More

Good value for money and good sustenance in an ambiance that is welcoming and on the trendy side of shabby chic. Only drawback is the cold draught when the side door is opened!

If you want to hear traditional Orkney musicians this is the place to visit. Good food and a great choice of local brews. Some of the sessions are free and others it is best to buy tickets in advance.

This place is run by Jennifer and Hazel Wrigley, two excellent Orkney musicians who decided to create a dedicated music school to promote the music of the area. The entire operation is great - sessions most nights in the bar as well as music classes in the many different rooms during the day. The cafe serves good, basic food and... More

£5.10 for a "platter" of oatcakes with Cheddar cheese. Four oatcakes (I can get eight for 60p in the supermarket, and frequently do) and some plasticy grated cheese. Not impressed. I was in at lunchtime so maybe it's better at night with a bit of atmosphere.

I was looking for some local entertainment on a Friday night, and I was told to go here. I drank a few excellent beers while I listened to locals play some of their favourite reels and other traditional music. It was a perfect end to a day of exploring.

Went in today. One girl behind bar who was obviously there due to school holidays. She hadn't a clue. Ordered a hot chocolate and Orkney gold beer. After 10 miniatures making 1. Hot chocolate and being charged I was informed she was not allowed to pour alcohol. Someone also appeared but no beer. Something wrong in the cellar. Hot chocolate... More

We sought out this venue as it had really good reviews. We were disappointed. It wasn't particularly busy and 1 soup took over 45 mins to arrive! Very cramped and not very friendly.

We make a point of visiting The Reel when in Kirkwall. We like the local music and the atmosphere, which is very different to the normal music venue. The audience can be almost as interesting as the performers (eg mature local ladies knitting while they listen!).

The Reel In 2002 the Wrigley Sisters returned to Orkney to live and set up their business, and in 2004 The Reel was established, allowing them to ‘put something back into’ the community of Orkney.’ "With both lasses having now settled back in Orkney their attention has turned to managing the ‘Reel’ – the sisters’ Centre of Music on Broad Street in Kirkwall. The centre has experienced phenomenal success in the few years it has been open, to the extent that it has recently moved to the building formerly occupied by VisitOrkney, next to St Magnus Cathedral. "Aswell as a being home to many folk & blues sessions and the Orkney Strathspey and Reel, The Reel also holds various classes in many different instruments taught by a wealth of talented teachers. The Reel offers and encourages a fully ‘inclusive’ approach, catering for all members of the community, especially families, and all age groups. The existing aesthetics, atmosphere and management approach fully encourages, supports and positively impacts upon this ethos. The management’s existing attitude and approach to providing a high quality and friendly customer service is also considered exemplary.
