Having read the reviews we were looking forward a meal in the Old John Peel. Staff had made a big effort for halloween, but have to say the food wasn't great. Had steak pudding which had been over microwaved ( suet hard ,meat burnt ), chips also hard , peas and carrots lukewarm and tasteless. Decent pint of cask ale,... More

Did not have food but a drink or two. Great atmosphere. The toilet sinks were blocking up a bit though

Great pub with great beer and the food looked amazing although we had eaten so did not dine. Prices are good and the staff are really lovely. Fires lit made it an ideal retreat after a long walk. Pub done up for Halloween was a really nice touch

We had a drinks and it was nice with a fire and comfortable furniture. I would recommend the mulled wine with nice mince pie added. Friendly staff

Old fashioned pub, but none the worse for it. Very friendly staff, who were really helpful when we told them one of our party had an allergy. Dog friendly too, with lots of space. Food was rather basic, but well priced. A really good alternative to some of the pricier options around town.

I always visit the Old John Peel everytime I visit Bowness. It's a great pub. A warm welcome and an even warmer real fire were a great start to this visit. I opted for a Deuchars bitter at 5.5% I think it was a limited production beer. It was pretty much one of the best pulled pints I have ever... More

My husband and I were looking for somewhere to enjoy a quiet drink on a Saturday evening when most places seemed to be very noisy or dedicated to eating. This cosy pub was just right with friendly, attentive service and a lovely open fire. It doesn't have the most modern interior, but did have bar staff willing to carry drinks... More

A lovely dog friendly pub with an open log fire, great beer and traditional pub meals. Ate here twice during our stay in The Lakes. The steak and kidney pudding was fantastic. Our second visit we tried a steak with pepper sauce and a burger stack with some nice bacon and cheese. A great pub with cheerful staff and prompt... More

I went into the old John peel with my husband and our toddler one evening after walking around Bowness on Windermere trying to find somewhere to eat. I'm so glad everywhere else was full or didn't appear to be as child friendly, otherwise we would have missed out on a real gem. We both ordered the sizzling rump steak and... More
