Passion. It is quite often impossible to summarise the experience created within a restaurant with just one word. Passion. Passion to produce the best food possible with the freshest and finest ingredients we can scour the world to find. Passion to strive to be the best. Passion to ensure that our customers remember. Passion to cater for people from all walks of life and give them a lasting memory of our restaurant. We're not going to tell you about how we have stunning river views with outdoor dining set in a 13th Century cellar conversion. We're not going to bore you with how difficult we are to find. We want you to come here, seek us out, walk down those narrow steps, be surprised by what

Took my son for his 22 birthday and the menu while not vast had something to meet all tastes, what we had over our three courses was simply tremendous ! The cave aged cheese soufflé was scrum, and son had the pigeon which he was...really happy with , for main we had the beef Wellington ( good portion and done beautifully…) fish of the day ( very good !) , Bombay potato pie ( very tasty!) , puddings choc melt in middle pudding and lemon curd poppy seed sponge…. All great ! We agreed nothing good be improved …. The small home made warm bread rolls and butter were also tip top!!!! All in all bloody lovely and highly recommended!More

Well what can I say, I visited here today with my partner as we were out exploring Durham for the day and thought we would try here for some lunch as we had never been before! Safe to say it was a great choice -...we both had Sunday lunches and hands down these were the best Sunday lunches we have ever had! Hats off to the chefs for providing top class food! The drinks and deserts were delicious too, all great value for money and excellent quick service! Thank you again for an outstanding meal, we will definitely be returning here next time we are in Durham and we will be recommending to all our friends and family! This place deserves recognition for how amazing the food is! Just superb.More

Was treated to an anniversary Sunday lunch and what a treat it was. Lovely to sit out doors, great food and wine and I'd go as far to say one of the best meals I've had in a long long time, it was excellent, and...to top it all excellent attentive service, thank you Katie. Definitely will come back again when we visit Durham.More

I booked a table here for Sunday lunch on our day out in Durham. We had a seat on the terrace overlooking the River which was was great as it was a nice sunny day. Our waitress Katie was very friendly and attentive. The food...was very tasty, we had a three course meal accompanied by a bottle of malbec. All the courses were excellent and very good value. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you visit Durham and if our travels take us back to Durham again we will definitely eat there again.More

Not the warmest restaurant in the world, whilst I appreciate the need to keep the air circulating I did want to keep my coat on throughout. Staff were attentive, professional and friendly and the food was pretty damn good Cheese souffle could have done with...being a bit cheesier, but the pigeon starter was excellent. Bombay pot pie was well spiced, the additional chillies helped it pack a bigger punch. Beef wellington was amazing, and generously portioned. Would happily go back next time we're in townMore

We booked a table at Cellar Door months ago but when we arrived we were shown downstairs to a dark table positioned at the bottom of the stairs, just the kitchen door and in sight of the boiler. I asked if we could be seated...at a table that I could clearly see was available upstairs but was told no. No other options were suggested. This was the only table. Strange since there were other tables free. We walked out. Very disappointing as this is our third or forth visit to the restaurant and not the customer service expected.More

This was an anniversary dinner. The welcome was very friendly and shown to our table after only a small wait. The service was really good and the starters of wood pigeon and Thai fish cakes were really good. There is abut. The mains were fish...of the day cooked really well but unimaginatively presented basically on a bed of salsify and little else. The second main was beef Wellington which was very difficult to cut and best dealt with by pulling apart. It is not the first time I have had beef Wellington by any means but this is by a marking not the best although once pulled spats it was ok. Onion rings unbeatable. I was somewhat gratified to see that I was not the only one in the restaurant pushing this beef Wellington around the plate and struggling with it -at least two or three others and one person asking to have a steak knife to cut it - very disappointing for beef Wellington. Would I go to the restaurant again - yes for the service and the atmosphere and position . Would I order these meals again - no we would not. Must do better and watch your polite customers.More

Have just seen this question - I'd say more for an adult taste than a child's unless very cosmopolitan. No judgment intended, but if you have to ask for your child, the answer's probably 'no'. Not that I'm sure they wouldn't... More
