This place is absolutely beautiful inside a delight to sit in.
Coffee is the best thing about this place! Probably the best coffee in Durham! Really good!
Food was tasty, and made with high quality ingredients. Little pricy but worth extra for the quality. There is Vegan options on menu.
The biggest downfall of this place is tbe lack of Healthy options, eveything on the manu is very indulgent, covered in oil / butter / syrup. Some overnight oats a nice salad or soup on the menu would be great! ❤️ this is only a downfall for someone who’s in your healthy eating.

I have been a regular here for over a year and always visit for breakfast. There is nearly always a queue which you queue to the left where the bench is and leave space for people walking past so you are not forcing them in to the road. I visited again December 2023 and it is becoming a common problem that although delicious and earthy the food is being served Luke warm, service is very slow and inattentive and seems to be getting worse at every visit. Coffee is the best in Durham if you are lucky enough to have it hot. I feel a little more disappointed every time I visit.

If you are visiting Durham and want a nice place to have something to eat or just a coffee you won't go far wrong by visiting the Flat White Kitchen, 40 Saddler Street, Durham, DH1 3NU. The best car park to park in is the Prince Bishops Car Park (DH1 3UJ) it's quite reasonable price wise. Go up the steps and you will easily find the way to the Flat White Kitchen on Saddler Street. It is open 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. There was a ten minute wait for a table but we'll worth the wait. Our order was taken by Amelia who was very professional and friendly. As you would expect the coffees are excellent. If you have a sweet tooth the caramelised banana pancakes with cinnamon cream, candied pecan and house syrup are delicious. The portion is very generous so you wouldn't need anything else. The sweetcorn fritters with avocado, poached eggs, chipotle mayo and bacon (optional) are also excellent. Thank you to all concerned. The bill (including 10% service charge) was £41.80 for two. I was full up until breakfast the following morning. Compliments to the chef and all the lovely staff who all seemed jolly.

We visited here on a Sunday morning in January, it was super busy but managed to get a table. The big down fall was the wait for our food, we waited over an hour without any explanation to where our food was and then they finally came over and said it won’t be long and waited another 20 minutes, I think they must have forgotten about our order. There was no offer of free drinks or a discount for the wait. Working in hospitality previously, offering a free drink or a small discount makes the world of difference to negative experiences like this one. The food however was really nice, 2 of us ordered pancakes, the other ordered salmon and finally a ham hock special, the big downfall was that the onions were cooked in a whole grain mustard which wasn’t stated on the menu, this wouldn’t have been ordered if it was stated correctly. It’s a lovely venue but our experience wasn’t the best.

Saw this place on google when looking for recommendations the good looked great so we went, you do have to wait for a table but to me this is no bother as only a good sign if it’s busy and thriving. We only waited around 10 mins. Got shown to our table, ordered food and drinks, our waiter was so lovely, I’m not 100 percent sure but I think it was Victoria? She had blonde hair and glasses, she was so lovely and comforting, as when asking to make adjustments she did this for us and reassured us,unlike other places when you get made to feel annoying or inconvenient. The white hot chocolate was amazing, the food did take a while but oh my was it worth the wait? YES. I’m vegetarian so kind of struggle for breakfast stuff most but they do sweetcorn fritters I’ve never had before and they were sooooo good. Infact I keep thinking about them since! :) my boyfriend and mum loved their breakfast they asked for things to be well done and it was done perfectly, over all we loved our meal my mum said it was the best English she’s ever had, thank you so much for an amazing meal and service!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just tried to come on a mid week lunch time with family. I appreciate it’s small but we were left out in heavy rain waiting for a table with two babies.
The waitress asked numerous questions making it difficult for us and kept going in to ‘check’ (do the prams fold? You can’t leave them elsewhere… you won’t have much space? I’ll have to check you can take them to the table… are you only wanting coffee and cake?) while acting nice and sweet. She made us feel unwelcome and that we weren’t wanted. I’d rather she said I’m really sorry we can’t accommodate you with two prams. She just made us stand in the rain while trying to put us off. We picked it as it had good gluten free reviews, yet the gluten free cake was next to the normal ones in the fridge. Wouldn’t recommend.
We went next door to Tango where they couldn’t have been more welcoming and accommodating.

Had breakfast here on Sunday morning before getting the train home. Were there 10-15 minutes before it opened and there was already a queue. It's spread over two floors so surprisingly roomy inside and very nicely and originally decorated. Waiters were all friendly and the speed of service was good considering that they had 20+ people come through the door all at once. The food was really nice, very fresh and well cooked and presented. People were still queuing to get in when we left an hour later.

This place is hands down the BEST cafe in all of Durham. Whilst being slightly more expensive than a lot of the others, a lot of cafes are now raising their prices to similar levels whilst not providing any interesting, unique or different takes on the food and just serving mid-tier sandwiches and paninis.
Flat White has a really exciting menu and my friend had a sweet chilli sriracha pancake with bacon, whilst I had the sweetcorn fritters with poached eggs, smashed avocado, bacon and aioli mayo. These are some of their newer brunch options and are really interesting and I would definitely recommend sweetcorn fritters, they were filling whilst delicious especially with the very well seasoned mayo and sweetcorn fritters, not too heavy whilst still having a good unique taste.

Great cafe in the heart of Durham. Funky urban vibe, welcoming staff on the door, busy but felt valued.
Amazing creamy mushroom tahini on sourdough.
Attentive waitress who knew about the food & was clearly interested in the customers experience.
Absolute must if you enjoy fresh quality food

We visited this delightful cafe for breakfast and were delighted with the selection of food and drinks available. The service was a little slow, but the pace of life in the mornings in central Durham isn't what we bustling southerners are used to: this place was amongst the earliest openers for breakfast at 9.00am! However, the food and the coffee were great and worth their wait in gold!

The Flat White Kitchen is a light, airy , plant filled cafe that releases happy endorphins. The unpretentious menu offers a range of savoury and sweet snacks, light meals and breakfast dishes at reasonable prices. The quality of ingredients is good and they are able to provide gluten free alternatives for most dishes, including the pancakes - as anybody with a gluten intolerance would know, this is not a common occurrence!
The coffee was not as strong as we prefer, but I understand that we are in the minority here.
Buttermilk pancakes were light with a good amount of syrup (even for me), gf pancakes equally tasty served with mango compote and mascarpone and the macaroni deliciously cheesy with leeks for added flavour and a crispy crumb topping. Service was good without being rushed, especially as the queue outside never seems to subside.
What’s not to like?

Our trip was undermined by an unfriendly member of staff.
The first incident concerned the table next to us where one of them was playing a video game. The waiter came over and told them bluntly to keep their noise levels down. This seemed unfair considering we had been eating next to them and hadn't noticed any noise. Even if they had been noisy, the manner in which the waiter confronted them was uncourteous and curt.
The second incident concerned payment. We had already paid, but she wasn't the waiter who had taken the payment. We then bumped into her on the way down the stairs. She asked us if we had paid yet. When we said we had paid, she insisted that we wait for her to go and check. We felt insulted by her refusal to believe that we had paid.
This also exposed a more systematic lack of communication between the waiters.
Throughout our visit, her manner was unsmiling and unfriendly, even when she came over once to ask us how our food was. She said no word of thanks. In short, she fell far short of the levels of courtesy and service expected.

We visited for coffee and cake and we were greeted by one of the employees, who helped us transport luggage we had and was very friendly. The prices are reasonable for the cakes, costing around £2.50 a slice, which are homemade and all very tempting. I would particularly recommend the peanut butter and pistachio slice or triple chocolate brownie. The interior is well decorated and clean, with a modern rustic look. A great place to stop by whilst visiting the historic city of Durham.

Visited here for Brunch . There was a queue outside but we’ll worth the wait.
Each of us had a different selection from the menu and everyone said that the food was great. I had green shakshuka it was delicious and very filling. The teas and coffees were excellent quality. One of our party had a nut allergy and they were very clear about ingredients , notified the chef and checked that everything was ok as they served. LoveLy place

First the positives
The staff were very friendly and the place is lovely inside. The coffee is also really nice however they charge extra for vegan milk.
I only wanted something small, so got eggs and sourdough. Both were dripping in oil so I had to leave the bread. The bill was really expensive for what we got and they added additional 10% service charge. Really really not worth it, definitely not coming back.
