About
The Powis Arms, a traditional Georgian coaching inn, is ideally situated in the village of Lydbury North, adjacent to the front gates of Walcot Hall. As owners of the Walcot Hall Estate, Robin and Lucinda Parish have recently taken the Powis Arms back in hand. Having refurbished the restaurant and bar, we look forward to welcoming you. They invite you to taste the best of local food and ales that Shropshire has to offer. Treat your family to a traditional Shropshire Sunday lunch, or meet up with friends to sample our locally sourced seasonal menus over lunch or dinner. If a quiet drink is more your thing, try our local real ales and ciders. We have a passion for only stocking high quality ales. For the ale fanatics we take part in the yearly Bishop’s Castle beer trail. We have a small hand picked wine list with something for every occasion.

Great find on our trip from North Wales heading south in our VW campervan, nice camping area next to the pub which was busy with locals and a Dutch couple also in a campervan … on a gloomy Wednesday’s afternoon! Plenty of ales and ciders to choose from and 3 good red wines on offer at the bar. Food menu didn’t have a massive choice but in a very rural setting without huge foot fall (I would guess) I see that as a very positive sign and boy we were not disappointed 😀 I flipped a coin between haddock and chips or sweet potato pie, pie it was then. WOW, short crust pastry with a lovely cheesy veg filling, perfect mash potatoes I mean perfect and baked carrot and stem broccoli on the side but to finish it off the most fabulous homemade gravy. We asked for the chef to come talk us through his secrets, he was so nice and engaging … what a joy.He even walked down to our campervan with complementary chocolate ice cream. All for £43 for 2 people with a pint of cider and 2 glasses of red wine.

Just had the best roast lunch I've ever had. The chef Darren is a top top chef and lovely human being. Janet and my self were treated like royalty by Darren. The standard of the food was 10/10, pork belly and beef stunning and all the food was finished on the bbq, outstanding!!! Our dog 🐕 Finn was given a bowl of off cut meat to enjoy. Please support this fantastic chef.... Janet and Chris, Finn x

We planned to stay in the campsite but switched to a room, which was very comfortable, spacious and good value, with a generous and tasty breakfast. Our evening in the bar and restaurant was a delight - all the staff were thoughtful, warm, welcoming and professional. We thoroughly enjoyed the food too - the dishes were full of flavour. Overall, the Powis Arms is a particularly lovely country pub that manages to be more than the sum of the parts, thanks to its great team and delicious food.

We went to the Powys Arms during a weekend away. 5 of us ordered food and drinks. It was very disappointing as 3 average meals came out and 2 meals and sides were missing. We did enquire and were told they would be with us shortly. 30 minutes later 3 of us had finished our food and the sides and 2 other meals finally came out. We spoke the manager as we were very disappointed that we had not been able to eat together and didn't really want to buy further drinks when we would have been leaving had all the food arrived together and were shocked by James the interim managers attitude! He first stated it was because the order had been written on two separate pages, we said we understood but this was not our fault and felt we should still be compensated for our disappointing meal experience, he then said (in a very rude and curt manner) that it was because there was a new chef. How remarkable we thought that these two issues should occur on the same day ruining our meal time experience and delaying our meal. By this time we were parched to say the least, so we enquired whether we could be compensated with a round of drinks. At this point james the interim manager became even ruder and curter now stating "you are just trying to get free drinks"! Now while I wish I had the skill and power to create these two events that ruined our meal experience to obtain free drinks, I do not. Incredibly disappointing dining experience and shockingly poor customer service and blatant rudeness from james the interim manager. Think further training is in order for james to ensure future dining experiences are not ruined in such a rude and shocking way.

Me mum and my 5yr old ordered lunch , we had soup and a hot chocolate my daughter had a hot chocolate and a bowl of chips . I can honestly say it was the worst hot chocolate I'd ever had . We expected it to be made with milk like most places , this looked vile and had clearly been made with powder and hot water . We expected better and won't be returning in a rush , unless the get trained on making hot drinks .

The worst stay we’ve ever had in our entire lives. Myself and my partner stayed here with our 4 month old son as we were attending a wedding around the corner. They left us with no hot water for the duration of the stay, so we couldn’t even bath our baby. And every time we complained they kept making up excuses, you’d think that they would get it fixed straight away since the whole place was fully booked? Breakfast was disgusting, and served with cereal that had expired years ago (I took photos of this). A heavily pregnant woman was rushed off her feet and seemed to be the waitress, receptionist, and everything in between. We called for weeks after our stay to get a partial refund and to talk to the manager, and every time we had a different excuse, going as far to say the manager has just been rushed off to surgery to get us off the phone. Do not give these people your money and ruin your trip. If the manager would like to contact me for a refund that would be great, since we paid £100 per night and haven’t had a reply back from any phone call or emails in 4 months.

Very nice food BUT I emailed the pub 3x and sent a message via the website enquiring about Vegan options and had no replies. We booked a table anyway as we also wanted to stay on the campsite behind the pub. There were only 2x vegan options for mains which was disappointing. We ordered the sharing platter to start and then I ordered the Spicy Bean pie and mash with garden peas for mains. The sharing starter platter arrived and was very nice but the mains arrived about 10 mins later whilst we were still eating the starter. So the mains were sat going cold whilst we finished our starter. Please leave at least 15 mins between courses. The food was very nice but you do need to reply to emails and leave a gap between starters and mains

A somewhat disappointing place to stay the night. We were attending a wedding at Walcot Hall just up the road so decided this pub would be perfect being a short walk from the venue. Positives: The pub area itself downstairs is nicely decorated, bright and welcoming and the garden area and exterior looked nice too. The staff we saw and spoke to were all polite and helpful. The provided towels were clean and the bed was clean and suitable for a 1 night stay. We did have to ask to have the 2 separate beds made into 1 which was requested on the original booking, but this was corrected whilst we were attending the wedding. Also, as already mentioned, the proximity to Walcot Hall was a perfect short walk. Negatives: The bedroom we stayed in (room 4) was (in our opinion) in serious need of an update and deep clean. The entire room smelled of what can only be described as old chip pan oil/deep fat fryer oil. This may be due to the proximity of the pubs kitchen which we believed was directly below. All of our clothes (even ones not worn) needed washing when we got home as the smell clung to everything. The walls/floor also seemed thin, as we attempted sleep we could hear chatter coming from somewhere. The bathroom was very dated and looked tired, and interestingly the old oil/cooking smell was stronger in there than the bedroom. The mirror above the sink looked like it was older than we were (37 & 40). The light on the mirror didn't work and the pull cord for the mirror and the bathroom light were dirty. There was hair around the toilet and shower/bath that wasn't ours. A non slip mat in the bath that was yellowing. The shower itself was an over the bath shower which took forever to get to a comfortable temperature due to separate taps that spun for an age doing nothing before water for that tap came through. Also, the thinnest toilet paper I think I have ever used! In the room itself, little inexpensive things could be done to make an immediate improvement. For example, the light shade was dirty and tatty, a new shade isn't expensive and would be an easy fix. Same with the pull cords and bathroom mirror. Unfortunately I doubt the room would smell nice ever unless the pub ceases to use its kitchen or has a full refurb of the room. Unfortunately, there wasn't time to bring this all up with staff as we were meeting the wedding party for breakfast cobs, and staff were busy attending to this. Although this itself was also disappointing. A big dry cob with only 1 sausage, I only hope the bride and groom were not overcharged for this. All in all, basic and suitable but definite improvement needed.

We were driving home after visiting relatives in Wales and popped in on the off chance of grabbing lunch. It was Sunday and they were only selling roasts, which is not what we were hoping for but as it was 1.40pm and they stopped serving at 2.00pm we decided to take a chance. We order beef. Parts of the meal were lukewarm but to be honest it was so good we got on with it. The beef was the best we have ever eaten. Two thick 'pink' slices and the gravy was so delicious. The service was good and if we are ever passing again we would go in

Stopped here at lunchtime whilst walking. Beef bap served in a toasted bun was superb and we got served a freebie of pork loins. Three real ales on, plus local cider. Locals in evidence and friendly service. As good as it gets. Well done to all concerned.

Terrible. £22 pound stake ordered that didn’t come with what it said. Completely undercooked to the point it made me feel ill. Then took 20 minutes for them to bring me another one - partner ate on her own as it took so long. 4 young girls serving with no manager. When they gave me an new steak I had no steak knife so had to ask again. I said to them I wasn’t prepared to pay - they took 7 pounds off. No offer of a free drink or anything. Terrible service. Food was bland and my partner didn’t enjoy hers either. Really disappointing experience

First time visiting, greeted with a welcoming smile, attentive and very polite service throughout. Food was delicious and good sized portions. I had the pan fried chicken breast followed by sticky toffee pudding and OH had the burger followed by biscoff cream, all delicious, well cooked and nicely presented. Only downside was that we'd caught the tail end of Happy hour and as our table was quite close to where the drinkers were sitting, we were a bit drowned out by their rowdy conversation! Thankfully they left half way through so we enjoyed the rest of our dinner in peace. Will definitely go back again.

We had visited Bishop’s Castle earlier this morning and were looking for somewhere nearby to grab a spot of lunch, that did not need a reservation. The car park is of generous size and the tables under the trees perfect to dine at in the cool shade on a stifling day. The waiter was extremely polite& courteous whilst bringing out our generous portions of delicious beer battered cod, chips and minted crushed peas. My husband had already fetched the refreshing drinks outside, to our table. The bathroom facilities were spotless too. I would certainly recommend this lovely inn and If in the area again we would certainly return.

Stopped on the camp site for one night on a camper tour, facilities were clean and pitch was good. Had a full English breakfast in the pub which was very good. Portion size was just right and we were offered additional top ups of coffee and toast which set us up for the journey ahead. Service was also very good.

A very mixed weekend with friends. Beautiful location good campsite and excellent Sunday lunch( Darren the chef is a gem and went above and beyond!) However friends who stayed in the accommodation were very disappointed! Unclean room NO hot water Not enough tea and milk for two nights! Door handle fell off bed base was dirty! Dead flies! Spoke to owner and manager and they accepted the above but when it was suggested that a fair resolution would be to offer some compensation the manager suggested a return visit at a reduced rate. Why would guests want to return when the experience was not a good one? So do eat there and enjoy the beer but be cautious about booking accommodation!
