Having had a nice meal out for workmate's last day, we felt like a quintessential Melbourne cocktail experience. Berlin delivered on that score, with refreshing drinks served promptly with a smile from our friendly hostess. However the buzz was thoroughly killed during our bid to order a third round when a seemingly superior ranked official motioned to us above the... More

The building outside looks well dodgy... but inside is cleverly done (pushing the button and waiting to be admitted was a bit weird but added to the ambience). The cocktails are fabulous... the Angela Merkel is divine, as is the Luftwaffe Sour!

We stayed here for many more rounds they we had planned. Terrific setting and decor with a split bar. Extensive menu of drinks and snacks. The novel cocktail menu has a road map of flavours which leads you choice selections. Friendly host and barman was charming! Thanks for the vote if you found this helpful.

This place appears to be a concept bar: with its buzzer entry (echoing 20th century eastern European bars) and the bar being split into "East Berlin" and "West Berlin" They appear to show Charlie Chaplin's The Dictator on a continuous reel and offer a selection of cocktails all named with a German twist. The cocktails weren't great, nor was the... More

On our tour of the alleyways led by my cousin, he lead us up a flight of stairs to then be buzzed in by a waiter. The place is set up very cosy, dimmed lights and very cool decor to obviously the German theme. Cocktail list is extensive, averaging $20 but do offer a good variety. As it was a... More

Couples visit after my husband visited earlier in the year. Up a flight of stairs and press the buzzer to be let in. Waited a little too long but that's ok. Two different sides, both furnished really nicely and dark and moody. Drinks were ok, service was ok, it was all ok. Liked the movie projected in the background. Best... More

We went there just to have couple of drinks. The cocktail i believe is great because it kind of design what would you like to drink. We didn't try the food, but i believe is more like a drink bar rather than a restaurant. However, the service was a bit slow. We waited about 15 min to get attention from... More

Had really high expectations for this place. Not only is it an obviously expensive place to dine, it has a reputation for being "hip". First, we made the mistake of sitting in the most uncomfortable stools in West Berlin. After being seated I took a look in the East Berlin section to see the bunk bed table was available and... Good drinks friendly service but I just didn't get the Berlin connection. So many bars in the Melbourne CBD this one just didn't fire for me.

Unfortunately it has such great potential, however the idea just didn't work for me and my friends. You may not be guaranteed a seat next to friends, or even anyone and there isn't room to move and mingle. Also guy at the door was rude as, thought he was way too cool. There is an awesome entertainer however who does... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
