We had a large banquet with many dishes. The whole fish was very enjoyable and the tofu very spicy and delicious. Some of the other dishes were not to my taste, including the under cooked chicken. Service was very slow and it was hard to get a drink.

Dumplings were served dry, perhaps been hanging around the kitchen for a while. Bland. Service minimal.

Been a few times usually around lunchtime for yum Cha only. Always served very quickly and great if you want a genuine Chinese yumcha experience, can be quiet crowded and impersonal like a factory, high turnover of patrons over the 2 levels, never made a reservation as if full only takes a few minutes before a table is available unless... I have been coming here for 25 years for Yum Cha. In recent times I only visit once a year and it is always enjoyable and I always look forward to my next visit even before I have walked out the door. The service is very Chinese, not to big on the small talk or niceties but it is effective... More

Dear Madam/Sir, RE: Westlake restaurant situated inside the Chinatown of Melbourne is a perfect place to dine for those seafood and meat lovers. The attractive restaurant sells sea creatures available for the guests to choose and select their live stock. Crab, lobster and fish could be cooked as per the guest requirement and quantity size of the portion. Roast duck... More

Yum Cha is such a wonderful way to catch up with friends - to share on a round table - to delight in small dishes and a myriad of tastes. That's the way it used to be at Westlake. Now $100 for 4 person yum cha with only Chinese tea as drinks and no special dishes and choices that were... More

I despise places that charge a % for using a credit card. They make a lot of margin off food and alcohol and to charge additional when u get to the register is just wrong. By the way according to the law in Australia you have to advise people that this is the case before they order. Some places print... More

After being waved randomly to a table whilst the "maitre d" continued his conversation with a staff member, without looking at us, the waitress then stood over us almost demanding that we place our order. We asked for a drink and as soon as 2 beers ordered, the wine list was whisked away (quite grumpily) never to appear again. We... More

We met friends for a catch up lunch at an old favourite restaurant. The staff were helpful and informative, but we thought the yum cha options lacked excitement and we were disappointed. We also thought it was expensive, so we will probably try other places in the future.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
