Authentic Greek food at a decent price, but we expected more. The souvlaki was tasty but tough. All portions were large - plenty to share.

Wait staff upstairs were unpleasant early in the sitting. Later, maybe could see why as they were seriously understaffed. Being coming from interstate for years and have been disappointed the last two visits. Meat was fatty and grisouly, and the homemade mousakka was oily, which could not be finished. Won't be back again.

We chose Stalactites at the recommendation of the taxi driver and did not regret. The Greek menu is quite diversified and they even had a special cooked food list. Almost everything that you expect at a Greek restaurant out of Greece was there and some more. The lines at the entry show that the locals know and appreciate the place.... More

Food. Service. Atmosphere. A must do place for food when in melbourne. The traditional souvlaki was fantastic.

Very impressed with the service & atmosphere on a very busy night in the middle of the Australian Open Tennis, where many visitors were present. Friendly, speedy service and very reasonably priced. A wide range of specials, at a reasonable price as well as the main menu. The lemon chicken entree was ample for a main. Our very traditional male... More

I came here twice during my week in Melbourne because I enjoyed the food very much. The restaurant is unique with Stalactites coming down from the ceiling (hence the name) and the ambiance although fairly loud is fun. I wouldn't advise coming here for a quiet, romantic meal, but if you are looking for a casual mid-priced restaurant with solid... More

All our food was beautifully cooked and presented and we enjoyed it so much we returned for a second time a few days later. There are Greek restaurants and real Greek restaurants and this place definitely falls under the latter heading. The ceiling is also good for a smile too.

Went for dinner for my birthday - place was packed! Got a table quickly, ordered quickly. Then it went downhill. They forgot our drinks, we had to remind them twice. It took about 30 mins to get us a beer and a juice. To be fair they didn't charge us for the drinks. Then they gave our meals to another... More

The cook is a greek lady who has been there for 35 years. They are open 24/7. The food is very greek and they have lots to choose from. The greek salad and souvlaki are very nice. Staff is friendly - slightly busy on a Saturday, but still okay service.

Stalactites is a Melbourne institution. It has been there as long as I can remember. It is always busy and serrves reliable Greek style food at reasonable prices. Also does take - away. It's name comes from the cave like ceiling which is a curiosity.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
