Gilbert Lau is responsible for creating the magical Flower Drum and is now behind the good Law's Family Kitchen. His greatness very much affected the group behind Tea House. Not at the extreme level of Flower Drum, but more accessible priceless this is an upmarket gem that deserves more attention. Exceptional service and good food. My favourite pinot had all... More

Easy to find and appeared to have plenty of seating availability. Staff were very friendly and the service was excellent. The food was ok without being exceptional. Dare I say it, a bit bland. We had a variety of shared dishes including mains, entree's and desserts. Prices were quite high and given the availability of many similar choices within Chinatown... More

Back after several years we were again delighted by this fine restaurant. The dignified, knowledgeable staff recommended the signature lobster omelet and a tasty seafood parcel as starters. We followed with the Cantonese roast duck with special sauce, the tofu with mushrooms and Chinese greens and washed it all down with Leeuwin Estate riesling and fragrant chrysanthemum tea. We concur... More

Well hidden Chinese restaurant in Cohen Place, which I probably would never have come across, had it not been for good reviews on TripAdvisor. Bought takeaway. I recommend the spicy salt & pepper king prawns - 8 delicious large prawns with lots of flavour. The vegetarian fried rice was a let down though, with only a few peas and bits... More

A group of 6 of us went to the Tea House for dinner and we were very impressed, firstly by the friendly staff who were very helpful in suggesting certain dishes and secondly the quality of the food, delicious. One of our group was vegan so does have trouble ordering, not a problem at the Tea House, the head waiter... More

Booked online, confirmation by text from them day before. Great food, great service. The perfect eating venue before seeing a show at the theatre next door. They even asked what time we needed to leave for our show. Everything was positive about this Chinese restaurant.

My husband and I have spent valentines dinner here for the past three years. We always get the banquet which is about 7 courses for a very reasonable approx $65 pp. The food is always delicious. The banquet always has san choy bow and Peking duck with a wide variety of different meals each time we have been. This year... More

We have been going to the Tea House for 15 years and the food is to die for. We have been to all the other top restaurants in Melbourne and this remains a favourite. Over the years we have taken many family and friends and everyone has loved it. The baked crab shell is amazing, so too the eye fillet... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
