We had the pork belly rissoles and panko crumbed beef schnitzel. Meals were tasty and enjoyed. I made a few modifications to my meal, the chef was happy to accommodate my request. Was NOT impressed when we were told the staff had to check with the chef so see IF we could be accommodated? We should have left at that point. However we chose to stay and I must say it was one of the worst meals...we had experienced in our two month stay traveling through Australia! The steak I had was lacking in flavor and TOUGH!More

My husband and I booked dinner for Saturday night while visiting for lunch on previous Wednesday. We left our name and phone number at the time of booking. When we arrived at 6 on Saturday the hotel was in darkness and a sign on the...door informed us that it was closed for a private function! ! As they had the means to contact us we considered it very unprofessional and rude. The dining room in this hotel is furnished with mismatched antique chairs and tables which gives a kind of warm homely feeling. The food is amazing - it's a cut above the standard pub meals with frozen chips and seafood. The service is really friendly...but we did feel the portions were a little on the small side!More

Best steak that I have had in ages, the local IPA beer on tap was delicious. The service was friendly and country casual( how I like it). I'll be dropping in for another taste from the amazing menu on my way through next time.

We were a big group of 28 including five children under the age of 10. They had a room set up for us it was laid out really well so every person could see or speak to each other. There was a variety of choice...on the menu for children as well as adults. I don’t know how they did it but they manage to bring all our meals out within five minutes of the first one coming out so we all got to eat together. Had a last minute dinner at the Main Hotel. The fish and chips -Lakes Entrance gummy - was superb. Crispy thin batter and succulent fish. Enjoyed with local Lightfoot Chardonnay.
I dined on 2 evenings in the same week. The Carlton Draught was as well cellared and presented as I've ever experienced. (Rings all down the glass as I sipped). My dinners were nicely presented, served with a smile. Not "trumped up" and very tasty....A grilled flake was washed down with a delightful Lightfoots chardy from nearby. The dining room has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This is hotel caters for all age groups. Recommended.More
We ate as a family here during a trip through Gippsland and while we weren't sure what to expect based on the outside of the hotel, we were very pleasantly surprised with our meals. Being foodie snobs from Melbourne we have pretty high expectations of...a good dinner and this place certainly didn't disappoint. I had the scallop entree which was fantastic, my husband had the ocean trout which was also amazing. Beautifully presented and tasty dishes. Attentive but unobtrusive staff who were lovely with our slightly rambunctious toddler. Would definitely recommend this place!More
Some restaurants provide good service. For us, service at the Main Hotel went beyond good; it felt as though we were being inducted as honoured and esteemed members of their family. It’s a hotel, but operated very purposefully as a restaurant. No pokies. No TAB....The front bar wasn’t even open when we did our reconnaissance run at 4.30pm, but Kerri opened for us. The restaurant was started a couple of years ago, contending with bushfires then COVID-19, by a determined and passionate young man, Skovi, with a vision to bring great food and a warm experience to diners seeking quality. Following a journey including elite sport and working in a busy kitchen in Tassie, Stovi has turned his hand to carve out a bright future in Bairnsdale. My wife and I both ordered steaks which were perfect. Mine, the daily special, was an absolute treat, the best value steak I’ve ever experienced. Why? 400 grams, Wagyu, MB 5+, rump, cooked perfectly to medium rare at an incredible $45. Try getting that in Melbourne and you’d pay more, for half the quantity. Oh.
