We did not stay, too cold, too dark and too noisey with background music. Old fashioned interior and slack service at the bar.

We ate here on the advice of some locals and whilst the food and service was good it wasn't great. This is in comparison to our experience of the pier hotel which is much more sophisticated...the quality just wasn't there. But it was still a nice experience.

Nice bar can't fault. Gets more lively as the night goes on. Jukebox is great. Pool table is available to. Didn't eat but food looked good. Prices seems about right too

Stopped here for a drink and decided to stay for dinner. We arrived early enough to be offered a promo where the bar staff flip a coin and you gamble on your drink being free! We ended up paying for 1 drink in 4, result! Great gimmick and encouraged us to stay longer and have dinner. Lovely menu and the... More

We were staying for a couple of days and our host suggested that we try the Whaler for a good meal at a reasonable price. It looks like a place that the locals enjoy so we gave it a try. We had the porterhouse steak special. It was good and it came with fries and a small salad. It was... More

Mussels, porterhouse steak, mushroom sauce, kids fish n chips, lots of options for seating so was good to find a quieter space for our meal.

Good place for a family meal. Portions were enormous. Setting was a bit dark. Generally okay though!

Following long drive to Kaikoura, needed a meal. First appearance was a bit of a rough pub, but overall great service, steaks were brilliant and good selection of beers. Locals a bit lively, but friendly.

We had had a long drive into Kaikoura and wanted a quick meal. The Whaler is on the main high street and is largely a pub / restaurant. The wine selection was ok but it is more of a pub. We had fish and chips and they were great - just what we needed at the end of a long... More
