On a beautiful sunny Autumn day on a visit to Loch Leven there is nowhere nicer to have lunch. The atmosphere is of an old fashioned roadside pub - welcoming and friendly. The menu is extensive and, given the increased cost of living, very reasonably priced. For those with smaller appetites many of the dishes are available as smaller portions. With such good food and great atmosphere this is definitely worth a visit.

Our daughter had discovered this beautiful pub on a previous visit, and insisted we have dinner there. How right she was! The bar and restaurant were warm, comfortable, and welcoming, and the kind owner took time to chat to us,and make us feel at home.I am so glad I took his advice in choosing the Chicken Cock a Leekie; it was absolutely delicious,as was our daughter’s Haddock Smokie. Unsurprisingly, the restaurant was full, but the service was impeccable. This is how a pub should be.

Called into the Balgedie Toll for lunch today but hadn’t booked as it was a last minute day off work. We were greeted with a warm welcome and seated promptly. Enjoyed a local ale and really delicious freshly cooked lunch. I had a small portion steak pie which was still more than I could manage but did my best to try as it was so good. My partner had the fish and chips which he thoroughly enjoyed along with the homemade condiments. Sadly neither of us had capacity for a desert! Will most definitely return (hopefully the open fire will be back in service by then). I don’t often leave reviews but this tavern deserves a mention.

We were staying for nearby for a few days, and fancied a meal out. This was the most convenient place for us, so we booked what we assumed would be just a normal pub meal. How wrong we were! It was so much more: the service and the food were exceptional, the dishes offering tasty and imaginative combinations of predominantly local and very fresh produce. We were really impressed that portions of the mains were available in two sizes, too: not everyone has the same sized appetites. It was our penultimate night in the area, but even before we’d finished our main courses we’d decided unanimously to try and book again for the following night, if we could. Luckily, we were able to get a place! Although it’s in a very rural setting, the tavern is only a short detour from the northbound M90 motorway between the outskirts of Edinburgh to Perth: southbound you’d need to do a loop back between the Kinross exit and the northbound exit for the A91 to reach it, though in these days of satnavs and smartphone apps, it’s easy. At the time of writing, it’s closed on Wednesdays, but open for lunches and evening meals on the other days. Weekends in particular can be busy, so it’s worth booking ahead. Highly recommended if you’re in the area, or even just passing through!

We booked a table via 'phone easily to have a casual lunch. Staff welcoming and booking confirmed. The space is comfortable and as other reviews have described is old tavern style with ceiling beams etc. Service was friendly, informative (there are specials) and attentive. The menu offers plenty choice for most and includes small plate options for some mains. We opted for starters of a smoked fish and salmon chowder and duck spring roll. The soup served with warm crusty sourdough and butter was absolutely delicious. The spring roll, so often an easy way out in restaurants was absolutely stuffed full with duck, in a great pastry served with cashews, spring onions, cucumber and dipping sauce. Our mains were a small plate battered haddock and chips, and chargrilled gammon steak which came with chips, coleslaw, fried egg and red onion, rocket, tomato salad. The gammon was properly chargrilled, tasty and generous, chips plentiful. I ordered this for nostalgia because it must be the 1970s since i last had gammon steak with the ubiquitous tinned pineapple ring on top and took a fancy. Thankfully the dish here was a completely different beast alltogether from that, another level, delicious. The fish and chips small plate was plentiful with lovely piece of haddock, crisp batter and non greasy chips. We had no room for the tempting desserts. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere and staff. Lovely fresh cooked food and very reasonable prices. Definitely added to our list of places to lunch.

Wow. This place is incredible. An absolute gem of a restaurant in a quaint little country pub. As a coeliac (gluten and dairy off the menu for me sadly) I'm often nervous and often disappointed eating out but not only were my options amazing, the service and attention to allergens was perfect. This chef seriously knows what they're doing, I have eaten at several Michelin star restaurants and not left feeling as satisfied on taste, satiety and price as I did here. Nigel the owner is attentive, welcoming and very knowledgeable when he served us. Happily accommodated our border collie too with water and biscuits. My partner was blown away by his meal too (both times) and said the coconut rice pudding was one the best desserts he'd ever had. We would both recommended this place to anyone visiting the area and can't wait to come back in the future. Can't say much more really...the fact we came back twice during our week here says it all.

If you are looking for melt-in-your-mouth steak or a burger this Inn has exceeded the expectations of even the top 5 star restaurants. All fresh locally produced food, nothing synthetic. The most organically produced meal I've ever eaten. Like ever!

Met up with family for dinner and a catch-up, I used to live nearby and had been a regular user in 70’s then occasionally after that with last visit 30 years ago. The interior hasn’t changed structurally but has been kept freshly decorated and welcoming maintains the quaint feel. The menu was a good balance of choice with good old favourites like steak pie, smoked haddock in cheese sauce, etc all items were good prices for post covid. The service was friendly and professional. The four of us all enjoyed our meals, it was a welcome change to the meals we have been served post covid in the Highlands. Everything was cooked perfect and full of flavour, the deserts that followed looked and tasted superb. It will be a definite stop next time I’m passing the junction on M90 going either North or South.

We had dinner here while staying at the Travelodge. Just found it by chance but had such a lovely evening that we returned 3 weeks later when in the area. The landlord made us very welcome and the food was excellent and well presented. Some dishes have a choice of portion size which is a great idea as you have room for dessert. I had the lamb curry which was fresh tasting and tasty and my partners steak was properly cooked and moist. A lovely chance find. We will return.

From the road, this small pub looks like nothing more than a local drinking spot. On arrival into Kinross we had searched for gluten free options for my partner who is a coeliac. From our search we drew up a short list and decided to take a punt on the toll tavern. Wow. What an amazing surprise. Attentive staff, one of the best pub meals I've ever had, excellent catering for gluten free and dairy free diners and incredibly reasonably priced. So good we went back again, and I had two puddings for the pleasure. 11/10

We spent 5 days visiting family on this occasion and were delighted to enjoy two dinners during our stay at the Balgedie toll tavern. Really friendly, wonderful ambience and delicious food and plenty of it. Its quite easy to zoom past this gem but don't, you are missing a treat. Worth moving back to Scotland for. Looking forward to our next visit.

Came here for lunch whilst visiting the Lavender Oils and what a great find. Hubby’s burger was very tasty whilst my steak pie was so tender. This is an oldie pub and full of characters. Great find

Been several times before and it had been very pleasant. This occasion it seems to have dropped their standards; cleanliness wasn’t great in particular the toilets. Food; spring roll was over cooked, batter on the fish (fish and chips) was thick and not fully , also a load of salt on the top of the fish. Staff member came over as flustered as she had forgotten our drinks order. Not sure if I will be back.

I am disappointed to read your poor review, it would be nicer as a customer if you pointed out any problems that occur on your visit, they could then be dealt with promptly. I do not accept your cleanliness comment at all, toilets are cleaned daily and checked by myself, if your restaurant table has been used previously then there may be some light debris around however we do try to clean any mess in between sittings, menus and condiments are removed from the table always and are cleaned, tables are washed down after use, cutlery is cleaned and polished before re use, customers can see all this happening at our service area . Our bar areas are also cleaned daily I am confident they are also clean. Some new staff members have just been taken on recently and are prone to the odd mistake or may be unsure of things, if you have any particular issue then you should have pointed this out to senior staff member, occasional mistakes are made by everyone no one is perfect. Your food issues are disappointing to read and have been discussed with our kitchen team, the salt on your fish is Maldon salt which is meant to be there as is mentioned on the menu description.

Lunch for two with my husband, Donald had the fish and chips which was excellent as always, if we could buy the pesto peas in bulk we would! I had the special today which was land and mint meatballs in a tomato sauce with feta crumble, linguine and crispy tortilla. Outstanding. I managed one meetball and bought the rest home for dinner, we always get the onion rings, they’re something else. Angie and the team where fantastic as always, how this restaurant doesn’t have a Michelin star I don’t know, the food is immaculate.

Off the cuff lunch and what a find lovely tavern great friendly staff starter panko breaded haggis spiced apple chutney wholegrain mustard and chive mayo crispy outer shell fantastic moist haggis centre which worked well with the mayo and the chutney. MAINS / proper steak pie tender slow cooked beef in a dish topped with flaky pastry top but lovely soggy pastry underneath served with 4 vegetables and either chips or mash finally a place that does real pie not stew topped with a bit pastry. My choice was the fish and chips thick fillet of haddock in a real crispy batter for maximum crunch home made tartare sauce and a fantastic pea and lemon pesto wow this is a revalation what a fantastic change from peas or mushy peas chef it was out of this world overall a fantastic meal and drinks at a reasonable price
