Situated on the 37th floor of the Marriott Marquis, Sukhumvit, Bangkok. The restaurant offers the variety of Japanese fusion cuisine, most of the menu were created by the chef. The service was great and attentive, however, the price range is on the higher end.

Full Marks to Akira Black !

Last night my wife and I experienced ‘Akira Black‘ at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, Bangkok. I made a reservation and was advised that I could use my Marriott privilege card, which was a bonus for such a high end restaurant. We arrived half an hour early as the roof bar tables on the same floor were closed off due to rain. When we arrived we were warmly greeted by the reception staff and shown to a window table, my wife preferred an interior table and we were moved straight away even though the restaurant was full! We were then shown the extensive menu by a very knowledgeable and pleasant restaurant supervisor who hailed from Brazil! We could scan the menu on our phones and were also given an iPad to see the presentation of the various dishes. We ordered a selection of dishes to share including their signature tuna pizza, edamame, tuna tartare with caviar, mushroom and beef tacos, black cod, grilled salmon, asparagus followed by chocolate fondant and coffee. Every dish was outstanding in both flavor and presentation. Our meal was accompanied by an excellent bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. We were served by ‘ Mean ‘ a very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly waitress who brought all of our dishes right on time, changed our plates and cutlery after each course and served the wine. Having worked in the hospitality business for many years, it is not often that a restaurant exceeds expectations but ‘ Akira Back ‘ certainly did!

Amazing Cuisine

I was so impressed with Akira Back. We arrived on a Saturday night without reservations, fortunately for us we could pick the table of our choosing only because we were so early. We picked many of the vegetable appetizers which were amazing... especially the egg plant and spinach dishes. Our mains featuring the halibut and salmon tasted a bit ordinary but that didn't detract from our overall experience. The decor was modern & chic and the service was very professional. We loved the view from our window seat and vowed to return here soon. Plus we were blown away regarding the price which was much cheaper than we thought it would be given the many food items ordered. What an exceptional experience...we cannot wait to come back !

So disappointed .....

Now in fairness the review of Poor is not really just about the food, which was well presented and tasty. The Poor rating refers to my dining experience overall, which was well below my expectations. This really is just another restaurant fronted by a so called “ Celebrity Chef “ ( aren’t they all these days ) well Akira is is not good enough to sell your name to a venue in return for a menu creation and a couple of visits each year. Taking you percentage whilst not maintaining standards is not acceptable. Dining out is about more than eating I can do that at KFC, in this price bracket it should be about experiencing fine food in a relaxed and comfortable environment. If you don’t want or value my business then tell me so when I arrive not by providing an uncomfortable experience. I had watched your venue for a few weeks before arriving in Bangkok and was looking forward to dining at AB. However after ordering drinks and scanning the menu I was abruptly told I had to order all my dishes at once as the kitchen was closing in 40 mins. Now my experience of this kind of dining is to order a couple of dishes and then some more and even more afterwards. This is the best way when as a first time guest I have know idea of portion sizes. I also do not appreciate being asked for my dessert order before my final main dish had been served. I would normally order a decent bottle of wine with such a meal, but as I felt rushed did not do so, I hope you missed your commission as much as I missed my wine. This restaurant is not cheap but inline with speciality restaurants in high end hotels. Unfortunately the delivery does not match the promoted offering. We were very disappointed as all of our ordered items were delivered at the same time, meaning we were unable to savory the delicate flavors that should have been featured in each dish. We were even served the Lamb Chips first that have a fiery taste to them that overpowered the other more delicate dishes. In fairness my bill was reduced when I provided thus feedback to the manager on duty, but I would have preferred to pay full price and enjoy my dining experience. I believe this restaurant can be far better than our experience but on this occasion it deserves a Poor rating.

Himself and his brand are mainly Based in North America and South Asia with more than a Dozen restaurants. Thank you so much for mentioning that this rating is not about the food as it is well presented and tasty but more about your experience. We do completely agree with you about ordering a couple of dishes and then some more afterwards. That is the best way and especially for the first time to know the size and also to check the taste. However, if I may, this technique work better on the first or second seating in many restaurants but not much when you reach out the closure time. Please accept our deeply sincere apologies if we failed to reach your expectations on the service and if you get the feeling to be pushed or even rushed. What certainly saddens me the most is about all the way it made your experience going on the wrong way. Rest assured that your comment will actually help us to improve a lot and guide our team members. The restaurant itself is beautiful and the decor is nice. The staff was friendly but we were disappointed with the food. We had the 7 course tasting menu. The food was okay but not nearly as good as we expected. The appetizers were good but we thought that the entrees didn’t go with the theme of the menu. Also almost every course (even the dessert) had truffle in some form and even though we both like truffle it was little bit too much. Overall we felt like the food was not worth the price.

If we are not saying anything wrong, you came for our Valentine's Set Menu on the 14th February. That day, we were serving a set which was only based on the French Black Truffles. By knowing the property aphrodisiac of this mushrooms especially for a Valentine evening , our Chefs decided to based everything on it, and yes even the dessert ! We totally understand that on a normal day, that would be too much but on this occasion, that was actually our selling points. Please accept our deeply sincere apologies if you feel disappointed on the food that day but do not judge us on a special occasion especially with this nice décor and friendly staff. Food tastes best when shared is a common saying that builds itself into an experience at Akira Back.Dishes ordered this evening were visually stunning that put a spin on Korean and Japanese dishes. Our orders for this evening included the impeccable TUNA PIZZA, wafer thin but masterfully layered with thin slices of tuna, drizzled with truffle oil; AB beef taco, HOT Mess (Seafood sushi), Baby Back Ribs, Duck prosciutto and Wagyu fried rice. Presentation was on point, dishes packed reminiscent yet reinvented flavours. The pizza and the duck particularly stood out. Desserts were at par with the previous courses, particularly the mochi coconut cake with caramelized popcorn and mango sorbet; a perfect harmony of sweet and savoury. Chocolate in a cup was another pleasant surprise, delighfully cool and frothy, crossing a rum and raisin with a banoffee! An outstanding family friendly restaurant with attentive staff who are clearly passionate about creating a great food experience.

Great Food, but bad cocktail menu

First time to try Akira after staying in the Marriott hotel many many times. We had a few initial challenges, with iPad menu and multiple choices not available and only 1 cocktail on the menu. The Yuzo cocktail was the first item to arrive and it was awful. Tasted like water with white froth on top. We sent it back and it was return with a little more alcohol added and they claim to have shaken it again, but we could see where we had sipped from the glass and froth was gone. We left the cocktail as was bad…. However when the food arrived, we were not disappointed. Food looked great on the plate and quality and taste matched. We only sampled a few things, fixing the lack of cocktails. Would we return, most likely not. However we noticed you can take your own wine, so if we did return, we would definitely take our own to ensure we were not let by the drinks menu. I would rate Food 4.5 out of 5 Drinks 2 out of 5 - due to poor cocktail choice and how bad it was Service 3 out of 5 - made little effort to resolve bad cocktail and lied about remaking it.

Second successful visit

It was our second visit to AB after a long hiatus. We were very relieved to find out the food quality remained excellent. The Tuna Pizza and Wagyu Tacos came highly recommended by Khun Peach (our smiley and professional host for the night) and she could not have been more right. We also had the brussels sprouts, jidori (?) chicken, and the kimchi fried rice. We had two desserts, which were equally delicious. The music was a tad loud to our taste. Luckily it was early in the evening and the restaurant had yet to fill up. The chatter from other patrons did not add to the noise. Value for money is very good considering the glamorous venue, sticking views of the skyline, quality of the service, and generous portions.

Disappointing return visit

We visited this restaurant several years ago before the pandemic and it was excellent. However on return in August this year we were bitterly disappointed. The menu choice was ok but we weren’t super impressed with being given an iPad with lots of pictures it felt very ‘fast food’ outlet rather than fine dining. I assume they did this because some of the staff did not speak very good English which is surprising in an international hotel. The drinks selection was also, poor. Only a few options of wines and when we ordered a gin & tonic they explained they had to go to the rooftop bar to get this. Again not very impressive for a fine dining restaurant. We actually took our own wine and paid the corkage which in hindsight was a good decision given the choice of wine. The positives, the views are fantastic and the restaurant décor is great. The food was good and presented very well but on the whole the service and the finishing touches of a fine dining restaurant were lacking. I stay at this hotel a lot but I am not sure I would visit again which is disappointing given my first visit was excellent.

Fantastic food, great views

Beautiful view at the top of the hotel, amazing food. There wasn’t a single item that we didn’t enjoy. We ordered a range of cooked items, including eggplant miso, beef taco, halibut, two sushi options and two fried rice. The service was great, with our waitress making suggestions for young children who cannot tolerate spice. Our waitress, Noona, was attentive and she was friendly towards our son throughout the night. We would recommend the eggplant miso and the pork belly sushi roll (sounds strange, but it was paired well with coleslaw and was delicious!) We would definitely return some time soon!

Excellent flavors

We truly enjoyed this. We had come across it by accident, happening to stay in the hotel where it is located, and discovering the menu. What a happy accident. We had the set menu, and found it to be a lovely progression. An interesting feature was the use of different types of soy sauce in several courses, so you could really experience how different and subtle they are. The Hokkaido scallop with kiwi, strawberry salsa and soy sauce was especially nice, as was the Wagyu beef of absolute top quality, flavor and texture. My husband particularly enjoyed the pop rocks in the dessert, and I enjoyed watching him experiencing pop rocks for the first time in his life.

Thai Japanese fusion yummy

I gave this restaurant a second shot because it’s in the hotel and rather cool. This time I was recommended great dishes, very fresh fish with a tangy Thai accent. The menu has lots to choose from, including pairings with good wine strongly recommend!

Possibly I was having too high expectation. For starters, I’ve ordered salmon, scallop and tuna pizza, tuna pizza is surprising, but the other 2 are not surprising. Most possibly I won’t try again if I come here again. For the beef taco, not surprising too. For the main, I’ve ordered beef rib eye and black cod. They both are SUPERB. Beef was so juicy and flavoured. The cod is surprising good too. Last but not least, staff are very attentive

We came here for the first time and was impressed with the service. Particularly Khun Lukkaew, who always smiles and introduce details of the restaurant during escort to the table. The next part is Khun Khaopoon who was very detailed in the every single dishes as she recommended food with us as same as her personalise is friendly and very attention to detail in service .
