After spending several hours wandering around the interior of The State Department Store, I started to look for somewhere to eat. The Store has a Pizza Hut and a Burger King (located on the first floor) and Tous les Jours (Coffee and pastry shop located...in the grocery store - also on the first floor). If your game to try something different , venture up to the 7th floor of the State Department Store. This floor is a food court dedicated to Asian and Mongolian cuisine. Access is gained via stairs located in the far end of the Gift shop located on the 6th floor. After entering the food court one is confronted with a large room with several food stands serving different foods. The menu is posted on the wall and is in Mongolian. However pictures of the food are displayed next to each selection. Be aware that English is not spoken here. Just make your choice, point to the selection, pay and pray for the best. I ordered khuushuur (meat dumplings) and Tsuivan (a Mongolian noodles dish with beef) and a soda. Cost for lunch approximately $5.00 (USA). Approximately 15 minutes later my order was ready. The dining area is very large and consists of tables / chairs and booths along the walls. Large glass window abound around the room and one is able to look out and see the roof top of surrounding buildings and Peace Avenue and other streets far below. Dining facility is very clean and well light up. The Tsuivan was not bad, but could have use a bit of spices and hot sauce. The Khuushuur dumplings (stuffed with mutton, mince, onions and spices) were excellent. It should be noted that the Food Court was packed with store employees and very few shoppers. I'm not sure if this is an employee cafeteria that just happens to cater to shoppers who venture up to the 7th floor on not. It was truly and experience to have time to relax and enjoy a Mongolian meal. If you are ever at the State Department Store venture up to the 7th floor and have a good meal.More

It's a one-stop shop where you can get everything- from food to clothing, cashmere, jewelry, perfumes, shoes- you name it and they have it. Food court is okay.

Besides the excellent, but small and always full 'Shokoladnitsa' on the ground floor of the State Department Store there is the option to go to the top floor, to a big Food Court with rather low prices. One can reach it by escalator or if...one has been shopping to take the escalators up to the 6th floor and then walk up some stairs. There is an open patio with tables and chairs and a great view over the city, but this can also be had indoors, if one manages to get a table by one of the large windows. At the quite long self service counter the various menus are depicted on the wall. Unlike at the 'Shokoladnitsa' staff hardly speaks any English., but it is easy to point out what one wants. Once the selection is made one has to go to a bar in another room for payment and then return to pick up the plate. My selection from the 'European Dishes' among several Asian ones, had been 'Tefteli', Russian meatballs mixed with rice. It was served with separate rice balls on a tomato sauce plus a cabbage and carrot salad. The canteen type food was pretty mediocre, but sitting by a window I could enjoy a city view in the ever changing evening light.More

Difficult to find. It is on the top floor and you have to look carefully to find the entrance to the food court which is accessed from the last floor of the department store. The food court has an open air terrace although there is...not much to see. The service is difficult to rate because all we spoke was English and the Mongolian staff did not. Don't expect much as it typically caters for the average Mongolian - canteen style. The food can only be described as interesting. We choose dishes which were on display and were also shown on colour laminated cards. In some cases we were not even sure what we were ordering. You order your dishes play for them and then wait until they are prepared before going to find a table to sit down on. Great adventure, lots of fun and definitely recommended if you want cheap authentic food.More

You'll probably get all you need here. Good layout. But there are plenty of supermarkets around so unless you are staying close by, or are shopping in the State Department Store and want to get the groceries on the way home, I probably wouldn't bother

A very good place to find local food and mostly everything you may need. There is a good choice of food, drinks, and a chance to explore the variety of local products.

After reading the reviews I thought we would be having decent Mongolian food with awesome views. It wasn’t so at all. The pace is dingy and the food seems to have been sitting there for days. There are some views but it’s not very nice....There is a piano where perhaps someone played during the grand opening and has since been long forgotten. There is a Foosball machine that is nonoperational and a patio. We tried the food and it was lukewarm and horrible. Don’t bother with this place.More

We go there sometimes and have some Mongolian dishes. Had milk tea with dumplings. Sometimes try Korean food like fried spicy pork. Of course some side dishes variety is not as many, if comparing with Korean Restaurants. But not bad. If you don't have time...or you are shopping in Department store, you could try to go up 7th floor. Now they serving some bottled beer too.More

The State Department Store Food Court is very, VERY, pleasant. It is a nice attractive venue. I don't know what I was expecting, but I was very pleased with The State Department Store Food Court. You can ride an elevator up to the 7th floor....I rode an escalator up to the 6th floor and walked a flight of stairs to enter the food court. You have several seating options from VIP seating in private rooms to sitting in the large open food court area to sitting outdoors on the roof of the building. They have a nice selection of cafeteria style food choices as well as a beverage counter with snacks. A visit to the food court is an excellent option if you are shopping at The State Department Store and you want to eat or just relax in comfortable surroundings. The views of Ulaanbaatar are very nice from the food court.More
