Located just next to the Chora Church museum. It offers authentic & fine Ottoman cuisine. The service was excellent & the food was very tasty. The staffs were friendly & nice. We were very delighted & touched when the restaurant presented us with a bottle of homemade fruit jam!

While not the everyday choice, the Asitane offer top quality Ottoman food - a fine alternative to kebap and friends. The range of meals is limited, the drinks are far too overpriced, but the food quality is very good. They claim that the recipies are derived from Ottoman times - whether this is true or not, I can not comment.... More

On a dismal, cold, wet December day visiting the Kariye Camii, this restaurant really warmed us up. It's smart, clean (with a cloakroom, good toilets, etc) and the staff are courteous and friendly. The menu has a seasonal small range of unusual Ottoman and more mainstream dishes, all perfectly prepared and presented. The portions are not huge, but they are... More

Great atmosphere -though the terrace in summer is even better- very good food, professional service. A restaurant I always return to when in Istanbul.

Next door to the Kariye Museum, Asitane specializes in traditional Ottoman fare. Many restaurants claim to do this nowadays, but Asitane gets it right, using recipe books from the Topkapi Palace, presented only after much experimentation.

To be honest I didn't like the taste of the food. But, I did like the experience. This restaurant specializes in reconstructed Ottoman recipes. Worth a trip if you want to challenge all your preconceptions about food. I had an almond soup with pomegrante seeds which tasted weird savory as it seems to me that it should just be a... More

We had dinner at this restaurant while being on a business trip with a big group of people. The interior is quite nice but same time there was nothing special in it as well. Appetizers were numerous and could meet any taste. The main course was stuffed melon which I don't recommend. At least 90% of out group of 50... More

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighbourhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
