This Japanese restaurant is in Cityplaza, specializing in ‘donburi’, meaning ‘bowl of rice dish’, with fish, meat or other ingredients served over a bowl of rice. As its name highlighted, they proudly feature fresh seafood coming from Hakkaido on the menu, prepared in the format...of chirashi. Seated comfortably, the first thing I noticed was the mural art of indigo waves on the wall, reminding me of the rolling sea where the seafood comes from. The cypress furniture offers a sense of neat and tidiness, and overall, the atmosphere is friendly and pleasant. We ordered a few things along with two dons. While the staff did tell us that one of the starters would take 45 minutes to prepare, my Signature Hokkai Don ($298) ended up being served first, ahead of the other starters. The presentation was appealing, with a good variety of seafood including sea urchin, scallop, botan shrimp, crab claw, yellowtail, salmon, salmon roes, abalone and egg. All the seafood is fresh and tasty, and I like the chef putting chuka salad in between the seafood and the sushi rice to give extra texture. The rice also had the right amount of vinegar to give flavors but not making it too sour. A nice one. The California Roll ($68) is a bit disappointing, however. The presentation is a bit floppy, with the flying fish roes not well covering the outside, leaving patches ‘exposed’. The taste itself is not bad fortunately, and with the mayonnaise it did remind me that his used to be my favorite sushi when I was young. By then the other don, Chicken & Onion with Soft-boiled Egg Don ($118) ordered by my wife, arrived. The egg is slightly overcooked but still acceptable, and the chicken fillet is quite tasty, with the onion caramelized to give the sweetness and there are also plenty of spring onion and sesames to enhance the aromas and flavors further. A good choice if you want a hot don. The Crab Croquette ($88) is probably my favorite in the evening. Golden brown in color, it got a crispy surface, while on the inside the crab meat, together with the rich, creamy sauce as fillings, recreated what I would call a sense of joy when biting in. No wonder this is a signature item of the restaurant. As we generally eat quite fast, the Grilled Fish Jaw ($278) could only be served after we had finished all the other dishes. I am not sure what type of fish it is, but the portion is one of the biggest I had experienced. The fish jaw was grilled nicely, and the chef adding some black peppers which spice up the flavors. The fish jaw itself is quite fatty, but after adding lemon juice, together with the dipping sauce with the Japanese vinegar mixed with mashed turnip, the sourness helps to balance the fish oil, and also removing the fishy taste. Another good dish and signature of the restaurant. The service is decent, with the staff attentive and comes to replenish the tea frequently. The bill on the night was $987 which was not cheap, but considering the freshness and quality of the seafood it is not extravagant.More

Hokkaidon is one of these casual Japanese restaurants in a shopping mall. It serves a variety of Don (raw fish on rice) and sushi. It also has some beef don too. I chose its signature Don - Marinated Tuna & Chopped Tuna with spring onion...Don. The lunch came with an appetizer (mushroom) and miso soup too.More

Hokkaidon has been featured on most all the media because of this Donburi which overflows with salmon roe. On some nights they will be cutting a whole meguro. That night, it was a big gathering so we had lots of dishes to share. Anyway the...star was definitely the ikura don.More

A good place for dining Japanese food when visiting Taikooshing. Their menu offers wide choices of regular and seasonal appetizers, mains, desserts and drinks. Just for mains, diners can select not only raw seafood don but also other cooked food items like wagyu beef hot...pot and prawn tempura don. We found their signature tuna mini don and Hokkai don very fresh and yummy though the don could be even better by reducing its sweet taste.More

Haven't been Taikoo for ages and found that there are new resto and food court on Level 3. Hokkaidon looks simple on the decoration and I expected they served the don set like different chained resto group... But... the food can tell you the truth...and how the chef tries to make it different to their guest. We went here for lunch today. Ordered the don set and deep fried calamari. We both loved it so so so much. Lunch Don Set - the portion is relatively big. They served the tuna don with udon. Chef made something different on the tuna. They seasoned the tuna with homemade sauce. It enhanced the texture and lower the sour of the tuna. The Pork Udon with kimchi soup - the quality of udon is just perfect Salmon Don - We like the fatty salmon the most. It reminded me the time in the fish market in Japan. Fresh and full of Omega3. Deep Fried Calamari - The best calamari as my friend said. You better come and taste it for real.More

I came to eat the tea sets. As I’m a small eater, their tea sets are sufficient for me as lunch. The sashimi is tasty and fresh. Service is quick and pleasant. The restaurant is bright and clean.

Here for dinner to try out this new place in CityPlaza and was happy with the price positioning as well as the choices. They have a good mix of set meals and donburis which are priced between the 150-250 HKD range. Qualty-wise it is very...fresh and tasty and nicely prepared/presented. We had the beef-donburi and the mixed sashimi donburi and both were very tasty. The lunch prices seem to be even better positioned and caters to the working crowd in CityPlaza. Good place to try.More

The sashimi has never disappointed us! We have come back multiple times and the quality is consistent. The salmon roe rice is probably the best in HK, tastes fresh and fulfilling. The eel rice will never let you down. The eel is from Japan. Price...is reasonable, multiple selection to choose from the menu and we highly recommend to visit this restaurant.More

We love seafood don and Hokkaidon has provided us with the best quality we can find among restaurants with medium price range. If you can afford to pay a bit more for fine quality seafood don, Hokkaidon will be your choice.
