I was really disappointed with this place. The food was pretty mediocre and to my horror some sauces were just store bought. The service was also pretty bad. The staff was not rude but just not well trained. I won’t be back.

You're not mistaken. I am in fact reviewing Ma Maison at CHIJMES. Colour me surprised but the restaurant is really cute with its low ceiling, japanese themed decor and open kitchen counter but the charm ends there. Our tonkatsu, a cut of pork loin, was...awfully chewy. It felt like we were served a sub par grade of meat that had been tediously tenderized by a meat mallet. The panko here is fried to a brownish golden hue so yeah, they leave them in a few seconds more in the deep fryer than a few other tonkatsu joints. What was enjoyable were their ebi (prawn) katsu. They managed to pull off a good fry and retain the juiciness of some respectably sized prawns. Tartare sauce was good too. The soup they serve up in the set was suspect though. It was filled with a tonne of veggies and onions that bloated us up for the rest of the day. I won't go into detail but it was pretty nasty. And now back to the ambiance. Pity that the decor was completely neutralized by the very contagious 90s English pop tunes. The 'chefs' behind the counter were a friendly, happy and rowdy bunch that sadly perpetuated the un-japanese feel of the restaurant. They were hollering at each other in tagalog throughout our meal. You can imagine that something felt strangely amiss in this japanese dining experience of ours. Don't get me wrong. Service is very friendly. It just feels more like a watering hole in the Philippines that serves chewy tonkatsu.More

I am very disappointment beyond repair for TONKATSU Chijmes branch manager (or so he said) Tonkatsu had been one of our favourite place to go. we love the food. so much. but today on 03/06/2019 this guy that served us has been nothing but DEMEANING...towards us. 1. he served the food without saying excuse me, i tried to say thank you all the time just to see whether he's gonna change along the way. no two way conversation, please, you're welcome, thank you. nothing. there are 6 of us, 6 full meal. with drinks and all. not more than 1,5 hrs. 2. not more than 1,5 hrs in he walked in the middle of the table shouting (yes, or in high toned voice if you prefer) "table is booked in 1.30 PM you can pay at the cashier" 3. he took our trays rudely until one of my guest got hit and he didnt say anything. then I speak to him with normal tone " excuse me sir (yes i tried to behave) do you have any problem with us?" he keep rumbling said that he is a one man show that he already said the table needs to be cleared and so on. he shouts at me. he didnt say sorry. up until i said i also once served 20 over people. but at least I DID NOT HIT MY CUSTOMER WITH TRAY LIKE HE DID. thats not how you treat people. especially those who paid for the meal. we love eating there. thats too shame. please do take action towards this as i have all the evidence of how rude he was to me and my colleagues. 4. he keeps cutting me off. up until i have to stand up. oh didnt i tell you that i am on crutches? and he leans toward me wants to walk on me with reason "i have other people to serve" .did you imagine if he steps on my fraction bone?. when we walked out, the restaurant was empty. nobody is going to use the room. he made excuse to sent us go. he keeps saying he's doing one man show. im so sorry , i once in his position, if customer upsets you could just say sorry and the case would be closed. his behaviour is very demeaning towards us. please do something about the service, i am so sorry but he did almost touch me (and he bump the tray on my friend and being rude about it) that is very petty of him.More

Small but excellent place nestled within the confines of Chijmes. The house specialty is the excellent quality pork, deep fried in crispy bread crumbs. Get the “set” and this comes with a good miso soup and other accompaniments. There is a good range of other...menu items with Japanese Wine and chilled Asahi beer by the glass. A solid dining experience.More

I wouldn’t normally write home about a chicken cutlet, as it’s more of a fun, lunch style dish for me. But this place deserves maybe a post card at least. The chicken cutlet is simple very good. The bread crumb batter is light and crispy...and perfectly coats the pork. The pork is another level of quality. We went for the more premium meat and to be honest I was expecting the pork to be much better than regular pork, but I happily mistaken. The meat was lean, yet still soft and full of juicy flavour that made each bite better than the last. It was a perfect combo and I can appreciate the difference between good pork and great pork now. The rest of the dishes in the set were ok, the rice was soft and fluffy and the soup good enough, special mention hoes to the oyster in breadcrumbs which were soft and delicious, but the real star of the show was undoubtedly the pork meat and the breadcrumb coating. The service was polite and efficient and the venue small but comfortable enough to enjoy your meal in piece.More

Visited this place as it was right across from our hotel. And I'm so glad we did, the tonkatsu was extremely tasty, and was pretty on par with our favourite tonkatsu restaurant in Japan. Highly recommend!

Visited this place in 2017 but only reviewing it one year later so probably have forgotten much of the details. It is an expensive meal for the tonkatsu but the meat was fried so well. Never eaten any other tonkatsu as good as this! Slightly...pinkish on the inside and together with that layer of fats, it was awesome! the layer of fats really did help add the flavour to the meat so well.More

We have been to this tonkatsu restaurant a few times. It is superbly located in the Chijmes complex and so highly convenient for anyone at City Hall area. They have some nice bar seating where you can watch the chef and more table seating inside...the restaurant. On our most recent visit my daughter had the katsu fillet (which is less fatty than the katsu loin) and my wife had a kurobuta fillet (black pig). I had a special momoiro katsu which was a premium cats and something to do with pink pigs. We also had a helping of katsu oysters to begin with which went down very well. The katsu were all really high quality and very tasty. You can tell this place really knows its katsu very well. All in all a great evening out. We signed up for a membership and will visit more often to enjoy our membership discounts.More
