Today was our first visit to this dual Cantonese and Teochew restaurant, upon recommendation of a friend. Since it’s our first time, we decided to order the more homely stuff to see if they could do well. Sometimes, the simplest things are the hardest to do, because naturally, very high expectations are reasonable.
Soup of the day tonight was lotus root soup. Unfortunately it wasn’t double boiled long enough. It needed another two hours to reach perfection. Hence we suspected that the lunch time today might have depleted their earlier batch, so they tried to do another round from mid-afternoon. Alas, the best was yet to be.
We ordered a steamed minced meat with salted fish, but the waitress misheard and got us the pan fried version. They offered to redo, but we decided to accept it. It was nicely crispy at the edges and quite good tasting. But the frying process took away most of the salted fish flavor (which was precisely why we wanted it steamed).
We also ordered a steamed cod fish with sour plum, which was surprisingly delectable. My mother had the baked cod fish, which she enjoyed thoroughly.
We had the stuffed minced shrimp with 3 kinds of vegetables in clay pot, which I enjoyed very much. But in terms of presentation, not so nice as the clay pot was so large for the few pieces inside. (And speaking of cutlery, we liked the teapot and plates! As for the tea cups, since they used cups with handles, it would have been good to come with plates!)
To end the evening we had hot almond cream, which didn’t have enough egg white to give it some texture.
In summary, it was a hits-and-misses experience with homely dishes. We will return to test their dimsum or their signature ala carte stuff or their purportedly famous steamboat (with shark bone soup). I think this restaurant has lots of potential.
