We have been going to Ann Arbor for years, and did not know about Pilar's Tamales. We arrived a bit early for lunch, but the owner, Sylvia, had us come in anyhow. She explained the menu to us, and said that everything was prepared fresh daily. The tamales are like no other. The pupusas were also tasty. We had horchata... More

Pilar's Tamales is a great little place in Ann Arbor for authentic tamales. The owner makes them daily, and you can either order takeout or eat them in this small restaurant. An interesting blend of decor, combining railroad memorabilia and Latin American art.

Very good Salvadoran food, cooked in a family style setting. We've done take-out several times and have really enjoyed it. My favorites are the chicken or pulled pork tamales which are cooked perfectly, moist and very flavorful. We've had various pupusas (chicken, pork, black bean and cheese) and all were quite good as well, although the pulled pork was a... More

When you first pull up to Pilar's, you may be deceived by the small "strip mall" setting and the awkward parking lot. But pass it by and you will miss out on one of the city's hidden gems. Indeed, what Pilar's lacks on the outside it more than makes up when you open the door to the restaurant. The inside... More

The Mexican coffee is a must! Just the right amount of spicy without being overbearing. Tamales are the best in town. Everything I've tried has been top notch.

This is a nice cozy little place. We were a group of 8 - they don't have a lot of seating but they accommodated us in their yoga room. Calling ahead always helps :) The menu has a lot of vegetarian options. I had the black bean and cheese tamales, cheese jalapeño Papusas and the Hibiscus drink. My husband had... More

We tried chicken and pork tamales and vegetarian pupusas on combo plates that come with beans-and-rice, and curtido, a lightly pickled version of coleslaw. Tamales differ from Mexican tamales I've had, the masa part seems both thicker and softer. They are served covered with a smooth mild salsa. The dessert tamales are slightly sweet, dense, and have delicious subtle flavors... More

Moderately priced but amazing and authentic tamales! Owned by the most wonderful El Salvadorean woman, Pilars tamales is definitely a worthwhile treat.

We were taking our grandson out for lunch and he requested Pilar's, one of his favorite places to eat. He is vegetarian so the many options were great. My carnivore husband was also able to get food he enjoyed. We ordered a variety of dishes and shared. Food was good though I wasn't fond of the slaw. Plantains and black... More
