Sea urchin was very smelly and taste bad, 5000 yen. We asked for a discount since we have already ordered. But the owner came out scolded us and bang the receipt on the table and said no.

Yes, it is a bit overpriced but the quality of seafood worth the $ when one travels there for vacation. The rice is not sushi rice, i.e. no vinegar/sugar added, just plain rice, quite disappointed. Offers many varieties of fish and shell fish.
Half of the Sankaku market is owned by this restaurant. Food was overpriced and not good. Had crab meat and uni on rice. Crab meat was very dry and tasteless.
The King crab (27k yen) we had was superbly sweet N fresh! Half boiled N half bbq. (I would recoomend going for full boiled) We also tried the grilled rock fish (6k yen), simply divine!
Highly recommended if you are looking for fresh seafood. They served raw can grilled/broiled the seafood with perfection. Pricing is reasonable too. Definitely cheaper than those you can get in Sapporo-shi fish market. Attentive service too.
The seafood bowls were fresh and tasty. In particular I was wary of sea urchin because my previous experience was that it tasted like sewerage, but this was fresh, sweet and delicious. This is inside the fish market directly to the left as you exit...the train station, so worth checking out if you are there.More
Left.of the otaru JR station is a set of steps...follow the steps and you will see a market entrance This restaurant is near the middle.of the alley.. Serves fresh seafood on rice... The rice is too much so maybe order one and then order extra...seafood. It's fresh and yummyMore
When visiting the seafood market in Otura, it is a must to try their beautiful, fresh seafood. You will not eat better anywhere outside Japan. And for a price you can't get better anywhere, even in Japan. So reasonable!
I went to Otaru on July 16th and we went to Ajidokoro Takeda based on the Tripadvisor feedback from past patrons. The eating area was a bit small and there were a lot of diners in the place for breakfast at 9:00am. I ordered a...set meal of grilled salmon, which came with three side orders and some soup. It was quite a bargain, so I also order some otoro for our group to share. I should have ordered a boiled crab, but there was so much food that it probably would have been wasted. A king crab would have been great, so shame on me. The seafood at this restaurant was very fresh and the grilled salmon had a great color and did not have any smell. I really enjoyed the set meal. I could not identify some of the side dishes, one which turned out to be sea cucumber. I did not like it, but my daughter-in-law ate it for me. Good fun, good food, good atmosphere. What a meal for 7800y for the four of us.More
We enjoyed so much here. The place is right inside the small local seafood market. The place is very simple but full of local taste. The service is excellent. The seafood is great & super fresh. We had one king crab in grill & boil,...which is too happy & indulged for sure. We used scissors & fingers to assist our mouth & teeth to finish the great gourmet journey. We ordered the huge clam in grill and fatty tuna with sweet shrimp in rice as well. Both are in high quality and very yummy. One of the best dining experience in Japan that mix with local market, live seafood, great service and amazing seafood! More
We tried a variety of seafood and all tasted great and fresh, especially the uni, fatty tuna and boiled hairy crab. Though the market is small, you can see live local seafood and it’s just next to the train station.
We ordered uni don and it was possibly the worst uni do we’ve ever had. The colour looked good but was extremely smelly... not sure if it was just our bad luck... but I wouldn’t recommend the place to anyone.
apparently they're highly raved on many travel blogs, but i don't see how much better they're compared to the random (cheapest) store I've popped by over at the Hakodate morning market. Prices aren't that cheap, though not exceptionally pricey as well. Extremely disappointed with their...grilled hokkigai. Their kanijiru also pales in comparison to what I had (for free, as it came along with my kani don) back at Hakodate morning market. Well, in short it's not bad, decent. But just don't understand why almost every travel blog i've checked insist we just have to look for this bright yellow banner.More
Walking into the seafood market alleyway to the left of the JR Otaru station, its clear that this is a tourist's attraction first and foremost. However, once we got past that and accepted it, and since there wasn't a queue (which there wasn't for us...in the late morning), we enjoyed it for what it was. Simple seafood kaisen don, amidst a faux seafood market with friendly service. The kaisen dons that we ordered, the prominent and most expensive one comprised of two types of uni (the #2), were the only ones we had on our ski trip in Hokkaido. The uni across all of our kaisen dons were uniformly rich, and sea urchin-y. Also pure tasting in the sense that the uni didn't seem to be the type that was packed with any preserving liquid - tasted fresh and briny as if it was right out of the shell (exoskeleton?)! The queen crab part of the kaisen don (the #6) was cooked perfectly, tender, with a hint of sweetness, but nothing like the sweet unctuous crab taste from a freshly steamed dungeness crab. Apples to oranges, I know, but if I were to go back again, I would definitely choose uni again, paired perhaps with hotate for my kaisen don. Overall a highly memorable experience in a unique setting with solid (but not inexpensive) seafood kaisen dons.More
Our party of four really enjoyed the boiled whole crab, from selecting the crab from the crab tank to having it cooked, then devouring it.
