Unlike Kyoto's special bamboo leaf-wrapped sushi Sasamaki, Nara's version is wrapped in persimmon leaves (Kitanoha) and lends the rolled sushi (usually of cured mackeral and salmon) a subtle floral flavour. The open ‘edomae’ Tokyo style nigiri sushi, the kind we are most used to seeing, is not available. Because there is no English signage, we went past the shop twice... More

Seeing the good reviews from tripadvisor, I wanted to give this restaurant a try. However, I left a bit disappointed. Sushi rolls were composed of very little fish surrounded by a lot rice. Also the it was a bit pricey compared to similar places I've been in Japan.

Went to this place today for lunch, the staff were lovely and they have menus in English. For lunch they have lots of seven us, which I loved because it means you can try a bit of lots of different things. Mine included Somen, a cold noodle dish which was delicious, and some of the smoked mackrel/persimmon leave sushi which... More

We decided to find this place based on the tripadvisor reviews. It was in a back alley, well away from the standard tourist haunts. The visit was well worth it. The young wait staff spoke English (and they have an English menu). We went for the Kakinoha zushi which is apparently a typical Nara approach of wrapping sushi wrapped in... More

We bought a box of Kakihoha sushi. Among fish one there are some vegetarian one. It is nice to take out and eat in the park watching lovely deers. Be aware that there is no garbage can in town and one must carry the trash up to the hotel.

There are three tables that each can seat at least four and a counter plus what looks like a more formal dining area. Quick and friendly service.

Hiraso is a small store located away from the hustle and bustle in Nara. They specialize in Kakinoha (persimmon leaf-wrapped) sushi. The fish was fresh and delicious; a very interesting style of sushi! Recommended for foodies in Nara.

The Best Kakinoha traditional sushi, well know in Nara. This is not conventional sushi, it is more like a glimpse from the past... a culinary tradition of this city. Fresh ingredients, excellent flavor and texture, easy-to-read menu and great environment. Recommended for first-time travelers and foodies.

Hiraso specializes in Kakinoha sushi, a dish that Nara is know for. The store is small, elegant and tasteful. Dining here felt very cozy and relaxing. The chef speaks English and came out to help us with ordering (he didn't have to go far- the sushi counter is in clear view and only a meter or two away.) the servers... More

In the last year I've dined at Hiraso twice and enjoyed my experience both times. The service is always friendly, the menu is easy to read (even with minimal japanese) and the food is exquisite. I'm taking my mum to Nara in April and we're excited to stop in for lunch. Thanks for being great, Hiraso!
