Glad we ended having lunch here. Both the food & setting is very nice, within the temple. They serve Buddhist food, which is extremely yummy and as such different from regular Vegetarian meal. Must visit if you plan to visit the Temple.

My family and I are vegetarians and this was a god send. The food had an enormous variety of Japanese veggie choice and was filling. The settings were good and the staff most polite and smiling. The service was quick and efficient. What more could...More

It isn't particularly easy eating vegetarian in Japan, but you can find excellent vegetarian meals at many Buddhist temple restaurants. This was the best one that I had during my two-week trip to Japan. The cuisine at Shigetsu is artfully prepared and served in a...More

In terms of contemporary, none can be more contemporary than Shigetsu, the Zen vegetarian restaurant owned by Tenryu-ji - a temple listed on the UNESCO world heritage list. This was one of our favorite meals in Kyoto, or maybe anywhere. The restaurant is set in the gardens at Tenryuji Temple, but you don't see much from the simple dining halls. The main draw is the food which is a sample of shojin ryori,...More

This was a pleasant surprise in the middle of a zen garden. This is not your typical monk food, but there is plenty of food and plenty of variety, all plant based. The food is delicious and a bit pricey but the experience is worth...More

Sorry this is probably too late now, but we got there at approx 1:55pm (paid the garden fee) without a reservation. We got to the restaurant at 2pm and were fine to order the set menu.

Because we needed several seats I made the reservation on +81 75-882-9725 the day before. Before you can enter the restaurant you have to pay admission for the Tenryu-ji temple.
