We've always wanted to try Kaiseki, a type of traditional Japanese meal. Then when planning for our trip to the historical city Kyoto, we decided to goto Kikunoi main restaurant. It's partly because Kyoto is known for its soft water that's great for making pickled vegetables and cooking. Now days, it's easy to book at Kikunoi through their website. We... More

Our first 3-star Michelin was a decade ago and we wanted to try a traditional Japanese version. It was mind-blowing with the level of detail in each food item. I can't imagine the steps taken to cook each item but I'm certain it isn't something I'd even try. It was Y104,000 for 2 people. Not bad!! It arrived as an... More

Not even a typhoon kept us away from our reservations at Kikunoi. It was an Autumn-in-Kyoto inspired 10 course menu. The level of service and setting takes your breath away. A private room fit for an emperor for just you and your guest(s).
Food - it came down to the food. It wasn't bad by any means. But we were... More

We were lucky enough to get a lunch reservation one day ahead (our hotel helped us book), where we chose the mid-range lunch set. They were waiting for us at the entrance, before a kimono-clad lady led us through the beautiful tatami filled house to our private room. Inside, it feels like another world. It was blazing outside, but the... More

Tried to book more than two months ahead. If you call, they tell you to go to the web site. On the web site, they give you different price levels but no indication just what might be different between them - you just have to trust them. So we figured Y15,000++ per person, at the lowest level, made sense. Got... More

We went there for a fancy japanese 11-course Kaiseki lunch. Obviously with three Michelin stars and the price cap you do expect something. A rareity which makes the whole experience that more special is that you will be dining in a private room overlooking the garden or at least some green. (you won't get a private room if you just... I visited this restaurant with my wife in a trip to Japan in August 2016. This is a michelin-starred restaurant, highly regarded in multiple guides and publications, so we had ver high expectations. The restaurant is organized in the traditional japanese set-up. So, you will need to take off your shoes. You will have a separate room, isolated from other... More

An incredible experience!! Not all Japanese food is sushi!! First of all the setting is fantastic...we had our own dinning room at a traditional table. The service was impecable... we were served by the chef's wife. And the food was out of this world. Really different to what I have ever tasted before.

This is my first negative review, and I believe the title summarizes the experience my husband and I had. In addition to the cold and unwelcoming experience we had, I believe the restaurant is coasting on old laurels. This was an expensive and relatively tasteless kaiseki meal where aesthetics had no part.

This restaurant is so well knowm, our cab didn't even need my directions. The location is in a quaint house environment and each fa,mily that is lucky enough to get a reservation, gets a beautiful room of their own where you sit tatami style on the floor. But fear not! The floor goes in so your feet are comfortably hanging... More
