We were looking for a lunch treat that day and were very surprised by this restaurant. Try the plain tenderloin pork or the version with vegi rolls and enjoy. The staff explains the whole procedure, so if you are first timers as we have been, don't worry.

You first get some sesame seeds to grind, then you pour either the tonkatsu sauce (spicy or non-spicy) into the bowl of sesame seeds. Dip the meat in there and bite into succulent port with the lightest crust ever - YUMMY! Served with barley rice, miso soup and cabbage salad. The set comes with free refills of everything except the... More

This branch of Katsukura is found in the Cube at Kyoto station. We took the elevator from inside Isetan to the 11th floor where there is a food plaza. Located near the grand staircase, we had a 5 minute wait at 5pm on a Saturday. There is an english menu and our server spoke english. People come here for the... More

This is good place to eat pork cutlet. In my opinion this is the best I have ever tried. They meat so tender and the outside is crunchy. You eat it with a mixture of sesame seed which you will grind yourself in a bowl. The downside, it is pricey but worth it.

We ordered the special pork loin that cost 2,300 yen for the big portion. It was tender and done perfectly. The prawns were great too! The best katsu we have tried. Service was prompt and pleasant.

Katsukura came recommended by our tour guide, Cycle Kyoto. We had the highest grade pork loin on the menu which was excellent and exactly what we felt like after 8 hours of cycling. It is a little difficult to find. As you are looking from the north side of Kyoto train station, it is on the top right of The... More

I queued for an hour to get in, but it was totally worth it. I had eaten here 4 times before and this visit did not disappoint. The service is always friendly and even though the place was packed, the staff were great under pressure. My tonkatsu was delicious and I particularly like the rice served with grains. The rice... It was our first Tonkatsu in Japan. Still, we could not find other katsu restaurants that are better than Katsukura! + Rice and soup are refilled + Crispy and tasty katsu, not so oily as well + Fast served - Long queue but we waited just 10-15 minutes (lunch)

This is a must visit restaurant for tonkatsu. Nowadays, there are also many tourists diners who have found out about this restaurant from various reviews. They serve great tonkatsu, so be ready to wait. Or, visit during the non-peak hours.

Coming into Kyoto Station after a long day of traversing temples, shrines, and parks left us with little energy for locating a good place to eat. After doing some scoping of food pictures and researching reviews on Trip Advisor, we ended up choosing this restaurant. We were not disappointed. We ordered the Ton-Katsu, a tenderloin cutlet Zen and a Wagyu... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
