Ajanta serves one of the best Indian vegetarian food we had in an Indian restaurant in Japan. have been here 4-5 times over 2 trips to Kyoto and have never been disappointed. What this place lacks in terms of service, its food makes up for it and then some. highly recommended

Interesting place..... first we lost our way and then a kind Japanese gentleman switched on his GPS and walked us around the corner to the restaurant (thank you Sir - you Japanese people are wonderful). Its a small restaurant, but the service was quick, the food wholesome and the quality better than some genuine Indian restaurants in India. I recommend... More

we usually do not eat Indian on vacation but really had the urge in Kyoto. we were not disappointed, the food was authentic and the service excellent. hit the spot after repeated Japanese meals which were not as good as we expected.

Very indifferent staff, poor courtesy to guests. Fusion of Indian and Japanese food. For example, we ordered vegetarian pulao and chicken biriyani. In both, there was no signature Basmati rice but it was the sticky Japanese rice. Slice of onion and a piece of lemon costs Yen 300. Plain Yogurt much resembles lassi.

The staff was friendly. The setting is traditional and incense was used in the restaurant. It is a decent place for an Indian vegetarian option.

Food was excellent served by very friendly staff with a great sense of humour. Service was extremely fast with nothing too much trouble. Restaurant had a warm, local and friendly atmosphere. Excellent value for money too. We loved it!

After reading all comments, I decided with my girlfriend to visit this indian and decide by myself if the currys really all taste the same and even if I have to agree that the two currys were quite similar, they both tasted incredibly good. If you don't wanna spend too much money this place is also perfect. They offer you... More

We visited for dinner, low key joint with tv screen playing loud hip hop. No problem with the music - it was indeed fun. Food is very greasy, we agreed that all curries tasted the same. We do not normally mind portions but frankly these were really poor: 4 small shrimps and 4 small pieces of chicken in each curry.... More

I read many comments here that said that the food is not ”real Indian”, but i'm not sure if those people ever been to India. This restaurant serves Indian food as it is served in India, and not as it served in the UK or the US. For me it was a wonderful experience, they sent me back to the... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
