This was the best meal! The food, service, attention to detail, literally everything was well thought out and executed perfectly. The staff were friendly whilst professional. Each course was beautifully presented and, more importantly, tasted great. The setting was perfect, the wood oven and the crackling of the fire set an ambiance that suited the meal perfectly. It was great value for money in my opinion and I thought it was sweet that everyone got a parting gift at the end

We enjoyed our meal at this tiny restaurant with only eight seats overlooking a very busy kitchen. The night we attended there were more staff than diners and it was fantastic to closely observe their efforts in the kitchen. All of the courses were beautifully presented – so creative! The chef has a passion for locally sourced food and minimal waste. My only disappointment was the drinks pairing. Note: it is not a wine pairing. On the night we attended we were served young organic wines and fermented mixed drinks. I guess this fits with the restaurant’s ethos. Do not let this dissuade you from visiting Lurra, as all in all, it was still a wonderful evening, just be aware of what to expect.

Everything about this feasting experience was beyond expectations. We had just arrived in Kyoto for our next leg of our trip through Japan and we booked dinner here to start it off with a “bang” and what an intro to Kyoto it was! Upon entry to what was once an old machiya, we were greeted by one of the team who would be one of our guides through each course of food and beverage pairing. We sat at the bar as if we were in someone’s kitchen to enjoy an intimate, familial dinner. Each course was surprising, unique and prepared with precision, care and such respect of ingredients. The description of each dish and beverage pairing (wine if you chose or some incredible hand crafted non-alcoholic concoction that complemented each dish perfectly) was a story in itself. We moved to the “dining room” for a three-course dessert journey that again blew our senses. The service was impressively fluid as everyone worked harmoniously together. This was an unforgettable experience that we were all grateful to have as a family. Worth every penny.

Went here recently with my family. Was one of the most beautiful and memorable experiences I’ve ever experienced. Would definitely recommend to anyone that loves and appreciates the craftsmanship behind food and the ingredients to create it. Service, chef, atmosphere and the tranquility of the food and environment is unreal. Would definitely come back

If you are thinking of going- don’t hesitate. Fabulous innovative food, great service, friendly staff. May be considered expensive by some, but definitely worth it: a meal to remember. Small intimate venue- 8 covers in each of the 2 seatings at 5.30 and 8.30pm ( note: if you chose to arrive early, you’ll need to wait outside due to space constraints.) Seated at what is effectively Chef Jacob Kear’s kitchen table, in front of the huge wood fired oven, we watched the food being prepared, the concepts explained- and then taken on a culinary tour of the diversity of produce that Japan has to offer. Imaginative drinks pairing list both alcohol and alcohol- free. Michelin star well deserved.

This was the best meal we had over 10 days in Japan. This was a very unique interactive experience with the chef and kitchen where only 8 dinners sit at a counter, get 10 delicious courses and get to speak with each other the kitchen over 3 hours. While some gourmet restaurants get too inventive with their food at the expense of deliciousness, all of the dishes were superb and the chef was so friendly. It was truly special and I highly recommend. You also might get to dine with a certain movie star and their +1 like I did that night too…

Absolutely fabulous meal at Lurra. The chef is a genius- the food & flavours were so delicious & innovative, and were perfectly paired with the wine. Service was really engaging, informative & friendly. Awesome experience sitting around the open kitchen seeing everything come together. One of my best dining experiences- highly recommended.

Outstanding commitment to creativity and perfectionism. The amount of energy devoted to creating a meal of this caliber is self evident. The space is intimate and absolutely beautifully designed with mood lighting and clean elements. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan . We are elevated by simple being witnesses and participants in enjoying this experience. Out highest praise goes to Chef Jacob and Ishmail.

This was amongst the best meals of my life. I say this having eaten at the French Laundry, Per Se, and Atelier Crenn. It was probably the hands-down best dining experience as you are essentially sitting in the kitchen. And you get to converse with the head chef, Jacob, a very warm individual. It would be worth coming to Kyoto to only eat here.

We had a pretty perfect evening there. We could see that the emphasis is on style and functionality as soon as we entered, but this was also explained to us later. The concept of the open kitchen is taken a little further here, because personal contact is also desired. Elsewhere, this is called a chef's table, but here it's more like "cooking with friends". This led to some lively conversations, both with the team and with the people sitting next to us. The food mainly uses local ingredients and is innovative and definitely a feast for the eyes. Above all, it tasted very good and we were able to watch the dishes being created. All in all, a very successful visit with great hosts and a great concept.

Hands down on of the best meals of my life. The atmosphere. The texture. The flavour. The passion. Inspiring and delicious. Save up for this one. You won’t be disappointed. Be aware you prepay the full amount as a “deposit”. On the night you pay your full amount so just be sure you are happy to be without your deposit for a number of days/weeks until it clears. Not sure why this can’t be a prepayment. Anyway..!! Worth every penny.

Beautiful experience. Elegant presentation and great tastes and smell. Food was perfectly presented and very tasty. The theme was consistent and special. Wine was only a B+ but everything else A+. Top 10 meal in last decade.

Lurra impressed us with their menu and their imaginative fare. Good wines too! But… things got off to a rocky start when we revealed my husband had an allergy to smoke-infused foods. He has a certain rare allergy to the nitrates that come from smoked salmon, smoked paprika, and bonito flakes. Nearly every Michelin starred restaurant is able to handle this challenge without a fuss. Not Lurra! “That’s impossible,” our waiter exclaimed. “We have a hearth.” Yes, Lurra features a hearth, but grilling is different than smoking. The restaurant was so vexed that the staff gossiped about it loudly at the back of the kitchen - as if we couldn’t hear them! The nadir? When they garnished one dish with smoked roe, something they could have easily not included since we made such a big production of our allergy warning. Bear the end of the meal our waiter made his rounds, asking diners how they enjoyed their experience. It was a muscle memory thing for him. He clearly didn’t expect me to say: “well my husband just ran to the restroom, so I’m not sure. I was shocked that you garnished his food with smoked roe, after we were explicit about his allergy!” Don’t get me wrong: Lurra served a good meal. I just wish they served empathetic service too.

This is one of the few best meals I’ve ever had. Experience was delightful— chef and team are lovely people that engage/educate/entertain, super fun to be around the table with the rest of restaurant like family, and the food was phenomenal. I would fly from the US to Kyoto again just to go to this restaurant.

City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
