Quick served. Worth waiting for a 'seat'. Had beef and evening later shrimp. All very good. I recommend this place.

We'd been walking around Gion and stumbled upon this great little place while looking for something to eat. We had no idea what we were in for, but we were feeling brave and looking for a new experience. Ordering off the menu was easy as there was English. We ordered a special pancake and mixed udon noddle plus two beers.... More

We found this while walking from our base at Hotel Mume. After about a ten minute wait we got a space looking into the kitchen. We had two really tasty pancakes.... one with fried Chinese noodles. They were prepared in the kitchen then placed on a warm teppanyaki plate in front of us. So we had great food and a... More

For a reasonably priced and genuine teppenyaki experience, look no further. A tiny traditional Japanese restaurant sitting which serves good size portions of Okonomiyaki, Yaki Udon and Teppenyaki -don't go passed the special mixed grill which is enough for 3 people. They also serve alcohol and soft drinks. The service is friendly and comes across like a small family restaurant.... More

Very easy to miss if you're not looking for it! We saw it first from across the canal and went in and ordered, cooked very fast and placed on a hot plate in front of you to keep warm. Great for couples and groups... even spotted a Geisha as we left!

We were for a dinner and is a really good place to taste the okonomiyaki local dish. The only bad thing was the air conditioner, it was very cold and it wasn't comfortable, so get a jacket!

I visited this place after someone told me about okonomiyaki and I searched for places that made it. It's such a cute place, I loved the atmosphere. You take your shoes off at the door and there's lockers, and there's a decent amount of seating for a Japanese restaurant, about 6 single seats in a row then a few tables... More

We ordered the special okonomiyaki for 1700 yen and it was totally worth it. It was a japanese pancake with meat, squids and vegetables like cabbage and scallion, a soy sweet sauce and an egg yolk on top. It was completely a bomb in your mouth! Really amazing. The normal size is quite big and the service is nice. They... More

Although not easy to find (as it is in a side street), we were glad to locate this restaurant. We shared four types of Okonomiyaki (a regional specialty), including ones with seafood, kimchi and "mixed" (special), and enjoyed them all. The ambiance is informal yet cozy, and the service was friendly and polite. A nice place for a family meal.

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
