We came on a recommendation of a woman at a tourist information center in the subway - and we loved it! They had an English menu, which was a huge help, and the sushi was delicious and quickly prepared. Our sushi chef was extremely attentive and kind, too! Very reasonable prices -- I think we paid like $30, which included... More

Nice welcoming staff. Good hot sake. A little overpriced, likely due to the touristic location. Good sushi, especially the yellowtail and eel.

Even though the location is in a quite touristy area, this place is definitely recommendable. Nice interior, great sushi (we had the chef's special selection for 3500 ¥), good value. We were not disappointed.

This is a cute restaurant in pontocho that our hotel recommended. If you frequently eat sushi and are looking for a unique Japan experience this is NOT it. Unless you ask otherwise you will be swerved standard fish you would easily find in the US. It will be higher quality and nicely prepared but don't expect to try new things... More

We enjoyed our dinner at this sushi restaurant.Based on knowing that one could spend 200-300 dollars on a sushi dinner, this is a simple basic sushi restaurant...nothing over the top or expensive. Our bill was the same we would have paid in the states.

Kappa Zushi is located on the famous restaurant street/alley in Kyoto. It is a bit hard to find as the sign outside is in handwritten japanese style so we walked by it a few times before we found it. The restaurant is not big and located right next to the river so you can ask to sit by the river.... More

This is a very nice sushi restaurant in the Pontocho street in Kyoto. Excellent product quality and fantastic sushi style. The chefs were awesome. Very good and remarkable value for money. All in all, a 5-star sushi dinner at very good prices. Strongly recommend taking the meal at the bar, since the chef will be serving directly and checking you... More

we stopped here for a sushi snack in between lunch and dinner. One of the few places that we found open at 4pm. Good sushi/sashimi menu and quality. Not directly on river so no view, but nice place with nice host with menu in English.

Very friendly staff with incredibly fresh product. If you want sushi this is certainly a place to visit. In a quiet back street with no sign in English on the door, best to use GPS to locate. Open till late.

Being sushi lovers, we wanted to eat it in its country, so we asked for a nice place with good sushi. We went to this restaurant because it was suggested by our hotel the Westin Miyako, and Trip Advisor. Although the location is very nice, the food was the worst sushi we ever had! Fish was dry and old and... More

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
