Excellent and extremely fresh (we even saw a poor unlucky fish be removed from its tank, no doubt to its doom). Get there early as the line is intense!

My husband and I stumbled upon this place even after reading about it. We were looking for a place to eat and recognised the name when we came across it. The line was out on to the street as early as 6.45 pm which is always a good indication of the quality of the food served there. We had to... More

Sushi is one way to experience the local Japanese food, and Chojiro is surely a great place for it at the center of Kyoto. For none-local people you will be provided with iPad, where the menu is in English, and you can make the order directly from the iPad. What a smart way to attract customers. The food was fresh,... This sushi restaurant has revealed itself to be surely an amazing and interest experience in Kyoto. The dishes are selected and ordered by an ipad automatically and very soon the waiter brings sushi, tempura, soup, sashimi, etc to clients. Location beautiful and waiters very nice and pleasent. Sushi is good even if not the best ever eaten in Japan.

Be smart when getting to this place, we were lucky enough that it was raining, and we popped right after the rain, generally the queue here is bad, very bad, but thats coz the sushi is good, amazingly good (fresh) I think there is something beyond fresh, coz, I have tasted fresh sushi elsewhere, but this is generally much better... If you want to have a quick sushi service, this is a good place to choose. The sushi is good, with large selection to cater tastes. I noticed no local customers, which makes me believe this place caters mostly to locals. So you wont find a authentic Japanese experience here.

Went back for my second visit on New Year. The sushi was just as I remembered, fresh and delicious. Do try their seasonal snow crab sushi if you have the chance! We were given a warm welcome on our way to our seats and service was fast and prompt once we were seated.

Apparently their rice includes gluten (sushi viniger), so I couldn't eat sushi. My wife did and said it was the best sushi she had ever had. The gluten free options are mainly Sashimi. There are many option (with gluten) on the belt, easy to chose from with clear prices. I didn't like the Sashimi options from the menu, so I... More

Small and cosy! This sushi restaurant only caters to about 26 customers at any one time. Good thing is you can make reservations, which I definitely plan to do next time... got there for a late lunch around 2.30 and still had to wait! And it was well worth it! The sushi was fresh and sweet, with the perfect proportion... More

“Seasonal” foodstuffs created by Japan’s four seasons.

CHOJIRO that values the delicate taste of seasonal foodstuffs and offers you sushi that the chef devotedly shapes one piece after another.

Our shop, which delicately balances a casual atmosphere only possible in a conveyor-belt sushi with our sushi chef’s commitment to quality,
is filled with the excited voices of children and their parents.

The sushi chef stocks extraordinarily fresh fish and shellfish and displays his skills day after day.

We offer a wide selection of your favorite sushi, tuna skewers that grilled right in our shop, and piping hot tempura, with Japanese rice wine.

Please enjoy picking out the dishes you want to savor during your visit to CHOJIRO.

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
