Very surprise with all the rave review. Went in Jan 2017 family of 4. For true sushi lover, this restaurant only serves average sushi. Maybe for the price, it's ok. 2 family members fell sick the next day who had the shell looking thing that's on their menu. It tasted bitter and wasn't nice. Sorry. Not my restaurant.

We were very suprised in a very good way about this place even after all the good reviews we've read about it. The sushi was 10/10 and so were the prices and the attitude. Very cozy/warm place and its at a very good spot. Try not to miss is as it's entrance is in an alley just before the end... More

Had the best meal from my trip to Japan at this sushi restaurant! We discovered this place online after looking for some sushi places near Gion it was great! The sushi was fresh and delicious! My favourite was the unagi (eel) It was also awesome getting to see the chefs make them right in front of you. They also had... More

Sushi Tetsu Pontocho is not a Kaiten Zushi (sushi with revolving belt), but the price of their sushi is quite reasonable: 2 pieces for just $2. Beside sushi, sashimi, tempura and some other dishes are also available.

Nice suchi restaurant with a quite intimidating but actually nice staff. Their suchis are of exceptional quality for reasonable prices. We recommend the toro salmon, the hamachi and the namaebi in particular. Also, out of the regular menu of 210yens for 2 suchis, you can ask them the more expensive stuff. It is only in the japanese menu. Amazing ootoro... More

We went on a Sunday night there. There were some people in front of us, but luckily we decided to stay. We had to wait about 30 minutes and then got a seat at the bar. From there we could just just be witnesses of an incredible performance. First thing that jumps out is the sheer variety of fish you... More

First round of sushi was ok, not standout but not terrible. Ordered a second round and bit into the tuna and it definitely felt frozen. Great price though. I suppose you get what you pay for. 324 yen cover charge a bit annoying too.

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
