Stumbled upon Gion Wasabi after a number of disappointing Kyoto meals in well reviewed establishments, and were more than pleasantly surprised with all aspects of our dining experience. Without attempting to sound arrogant, we know sushi; we come from Vancouver being a major sushi city. There would appear to be a lot of very mediocre sushi in Kyoto preying on... More

In short: overpriced and under delivered. Also have to note, staff not very friendly to English speakers... Felt ripped off. 10/10 would not recommend

I would give this a 3.5. My boyfriend and I traveled all through Japan and Kyoto was our last stop. In general, we felt the food there was bland and nothing exciting compared with our experiences in Tokyo, hakone and Osaka. Sushi was good, everything was fresh. We had two of the economy sushi platters and then a fatty tuna... More

Our family of three had dinner here and thought the food was average (and pricy for Kyoto standard). May be it is because of its location at Gion, but you can get better and less pricy food in Shijo area.

In the heart of Gion eateries we stumbled upon this place. We ate early (arrived 6:15), the staff greeted us but explained the restaurant was fully booked (it was a Friday night), that we could eat at the bar for a 1hr period only. The sushi was superb. The reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the sushi chefs... More

Visiting from Australia. Unfortunately the waiters' English is minimal, but the food speaks for itself. Good quality food and the steaks melt in your mouth. We ordered the Y5400 set menu plus the Y540 cover charge

Walked in without a booking and lucky to get a spot. The food was amazing, really good sushi and sushi roll as well as the other food. Great customer service and thoroughly enjoyed it! There was a service charge and the English menu did not do the food justice.

Ultra contemporary design with a fairly wide range of sushi, tempura etc food available on the menu (also in English). Wide alcohol menu. Set food menus from 3700 upwards. Smoking allowed everywhere and that was a new experience for a European - took me back 30 years! Quality of food was average with sushi a touch on the rough side.... More

The sushi was excellent. The place was not easy to find. It seems to be a lot of bookings. We had luck and was offered a place in front of the grill at the bar with a view over the cooks.

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
