Most amazing food and customer service. Food was worth the wait and the environment was perfect to relax in after a long day of sightseeing. Very friendly staff, will definitely come back.

The negative reviews seem to be from people who came when it was too busy to get in - that's a terrible reason to give a bad review. My wife and I went on a Tuesday night, and we were one of only two parties there. As such the service was attentive, helpful to two Americans who spoke no Japanese,... More

Most of the yakitori offerings are around 100¥ or 120¥ maximum. This seems to be where some locals go. Large drink menu. I've been here twice and loved it both times. Someone else commented that it is a very small shop with few seats: that is accurate!

Our guide recommended Onishi to us and also reserved a table. When i read some of the reviews on TA i had second thoughts about going but we went anyway. We were greeted ina warm manner at the door by a server who spoke perfect English, and then were seated in a private room. 3 He gave us an English... More

There was plenty of room left in the restaurant but we were denied service by being told there would be a very long wait. The words were polite, but the way it was said and the motions towards the door indicated he couldn't get us out the door fast enough. I came back to our hotel and decided to look... More

We went here because it was right across thw street from our hotel. What should have been 45 min at most took 2 hours. The food was all quite oily except the gyoza which was burnt. The waitstaff were friendly and smiled but ut tiok way too long. To be fair, we dont speak any japanese beyond hello and thank... More

Probably the best yakitori bar in Kyoto, Onishi is offers an intimate and authentic Japanese dining experience. The staff are incredibly friendly and polite and are a great help if you would like some practice learning Japanese!! Like with all restaurants in Japan, it is polite for gaijins to go with a phrasebook or useful phrases memorised. If not, exercise... More

The staff could barely spoke English and when I visited, it was full and I was chased out even though I expressed my keen interest that I was willingly to wait. What kind of service is that? I was utterly disappointed by the attitude considering how polite the Japanese normally are. The yakitoris surely look good but the place was... More

Wonderful barbecue. Plenty of succulent, tender, and juicy Japanese beef served in great atmosphere.

Located in a beautiful building, this restaurant offers barbecued Japanese meats grilled right at your table. In the middle of every table you will find a grill where you cook your own food. It tasted delicious, especially the Japanese beef. Very friendly staff.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
