I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant on a previous visit to Shanghai but the food somehow fell short of my expectations on my recent visit. Most of the dishes, especially the lion head dumpling soup were overly salty. What fared much better though were the pastries especially the cashew pastries which were tasty. I'll probably stick more to... More

There are plenty of restaurant and food stands around offering the same quality of food or better at a fraction of the price. The expensive setup matches the prices but not the service, which is hurried and discourteous.

We only had one night in Shanghai and wanted to try a few local dishes at a decent restaurant, and I'm glad we picked this place. We ordered two cold vegetable dishes, two types of dim sum, two mains and a big dish of fried rice. With a beer and an OJ the bill came to Y390 (about £43) which... More

Very good food. They don't sell wine by the glass, just by the bottle. Large portions. THere can be a long wait if you don't go early.

I've been here twice in two weeks- dining in one of the private rooms and eating together with the locals in a round table. Each time, I was not disappointed with the delicious cuisine. The pork and prawn dumplings, Shanghai's iconic dumplings were very tasty with adequate gravy in them. For anyone who has not tried such dumplings, I recommend... More

We arrived at the restaurant at 2:30pm which was just pass lunch so the place was barely seated. We just wanted to try the popular large steamed dumpling filled with a minced pork and crab cream sauce whereby they provide a straw for you to suck out the content before eating the skin. Nothing specular but it was pricey, 28... More

We enjoyed this restaurant during our stay in Shanghai. The restaurant is close to the Yu Garden place and offers traditional chinese food. The place is very nice, the food is fresh and good. We tasted dumplings, fish and vegetables.

Ate in one of the private banquet rooms with a party of eight. The range and quality of the dishes was superb and the service was outstanding. The view of the Yu Garden from our second floor banquet room was an added bonus. Well worth the visit.

I went here at the invite of some Chinese colleagues. Seemed a VERY popular place near Yu Yuan Garden. The crab was very nice and the mushroom dish was fantastic. The mandarin sweet and sour fish looked great, but was a bit to sugary for me. I would eat here again, mainly for the ambiance.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Shanghai’s original walls live on in the curve of the streets that serve as the border to the old city. An aerial view shows a clear circular outline and parts of the original wall are preserved as monuments to the ancient past. The main tourist attraction of Yuyuan (which means Yu garden, though it is often redundantly referred to as Yuyuan Garden) draws hordes of tourists every day, but wandering the streets around the complex reveals more exciting attractions such as food and antique markets. There are also streets lined with shops peddling everyday wares such as Chinese dining ware and craft notions that can be even more enticing to visitors uninterested in the usual tourist fare.
