this place is so quaint and an oasis from the heat and hustle bustle of Shanghai. V Close to Sun Yet Sun's museum residence and a really find! Cosy with large comfy sofas and lots of antiques to check out at every nook and cranny. Sitting on old Shanghainese furniture and sipping your green tea really does transport you back... More

We stopped here for a light lunch after walking round the old French concession. We ate in the pleasant garden. Food was very good, and the atmosphere very relaxing.

I have been here twice before while walking between Xiantandi, Fuxing Park and Tianzifang, while showing myself and friends around Shanghai. What ever the season, I would recommend this place. I've had a hot coffee snuggled on a quiet sofa, surrounded by ticking clocks and a jumble of lamps, and enjoyed an iced latte in the sun dappled courtyard. It... More

Close to the Shanghai Museum of Sun Yat Sen's Former Residence, this cafe has lovely ambience and beautiful antiques (1930's) for browsing and for resting. Sandwiches are fresh and go down well with a cup of coffee or tea. The garden is very nicely decorated with old items (East and West) and is surprisingly tranquil though it is surrounded by... More

Basically, on a low time of the day, when the servers are not tied up, they get all their orders straight, and everything is literally perfect. Cute little garden, unique sofas and chairs makes this place more than just special. Now the flip side, when its busy. Say a saturday afternoon near 1ish. Wow. That cozy becomes the cramped, those... If I had discovered this charming spot earlier, I would have been there daily. Beautiful building and garden, often fashion shoots going on in front of building. filled with vintage memorabilia, light 1920's jazz playing in background. Coffees, teas, beer, wine & champagne by the glass. Also desserts and brunch/lunch menu. Upstairs has great lounge furniture, garden is magical.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
