It was a great place to do some work on my laptop (speedy wifi), get cozy with a mug of milk tea, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. As the title suggests, there are pictures of the Beatles and John Lennon everywhere, and there's an almost back-in-time feel to the place. There's a vintage phonograph in one of the corners, and... I stumbled upon this cafe - not sure it was a cafe at all except it had a Lavazza sign hanging outside. I nervously stuck my head in and found an old woman sitting on a chair 'Coffee?' She asked. I walked into what appeared to be someone's house then I realised that it was a cafe. Basically what they've... More

Though I only dropped in for a latte (well-made, unlike many others in Shanghai), I was completely charmed by the atmosphere of this former French concession house. Decorated with black and white photos of someone's american heroes -- Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, Kurt Cobain, John Lennon -- ; vintage colour posters of the smiling Chairman; a collection of toy tin... This cafe is a bit hidden, but great location! It's a very quaint spot to stop for a coffee or hot chocolate and a chat or working from home day! It's an English cottage feel with white washed decor. Coffee is decent - but we tried the "homemade" cookies - which were hard butter biscuit (so skip them!!!). I believe... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
