Three of us tonight on a real calm wednesday evening - not much going on. The restaurant's crew totally unmotivated, standing alongside munching and playing with their mobiles, completely unaware, that there were guests to be served. Once summoned, they had no idea whatsoever about the menue (which had to be ordered from a tablet-not very handy) . Food was... More

Went for a group dinner on a Saturday night and ended up being one of the only two tables occupied there, although the exterior and interior were very nice. There were about 5-6 service staff working, yet they would cycle between all of them hanging off the bar playing with their phones to all if them completely absent. At one... More

We had meant to eat at Herbs for a while but when we finally did it was really disappointing. Obviously we were a little late because when we arrived there at 1:45 pm it seemed as if the service was about to shut down. Nevertheless we were seated. Some clever person must have wanted to be different form other restaurants... More

Great location & building, but the food and service are both very poor. At least three of the starters we chose wasn't available and when the main courses finally came, didn't at all resemble what we'd ordered. Also it seemed they only had one bottle of each red wine, as we had to change after each bottle! A shame, but... More

Nice little Thai restaurant. We have been here a couple of times for lunch. They offer an affordable set lunch menu. Keep in mind that the staff hardly speaks english, but if you know how to handle an I pad you are able to order!

Wanted to get away from Chinese cuisine and fast food. Walked along the Fumin Street and stumbled upon this place at a corner. Ordered the fried noodles and a bowl of the spicy seafood Tom Yam soup. Both were good and service was friendly and efficient. Ambiance was also good; a welcome change from the typically strong aroma of stale... More

Great location, in the heart of French Concession. Nice dating environment. Fab thai deco. Friendly service. However... their food is a far cry from being authentic. A pad thai that was ketup flavoured, red curry that was fragrant but not spicy... plus, the portions are tiny. They serve rice as if it is a serving of an ice cream scope?!?... More

Everything was excellent and the service as well. Try the Papaya salad, the soup, Morning Glory, Shrimp in Black Pepper, all were outstanding and we have been in Thailand. It cost a bit more than the Chinese restaurants but we felt it was worth it. Linen napkins, and a nice ambience and decor. Need a reservation for weekend nights. A... More

Have been to the place for dinner now. Had some soup, curry, a chicken dish, vegetable with shrimp, spring rolls, phad thai and a vermicelli salad. Environment - nice with some thai influences. Quite empty so very quiet. Soup had a strong coconut milk flavor. Curry with beef was a bit too sweet. Phad thai was okay. Spring rolls looked... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
