Times are hard but this gem of a place continues to provide us visitors with top quality pizzas and service. Newport is busy and with the social distancing in place it can be a bit of a challenge to find anywhere to get food in the evening. They've nailed the whole covid restrictions with an efficient ordering and pick up system. Just take your umbrella in case you have to wait (we didn't!) as you are on the street outside. The pizzas and sides are delicious. The onion rings were the best we've ever had! Thanks guys and really well done!

The Canteen did not disappoint when supplying a large order of pizzas and sides for my daughters 16th Birthday. All cooked to perfection and extremely obliging with specific requests. Friendly and efficient service from a professional staff group.
Look forward to our next takeaway 😋

We came here for lunch last week and had one of the best meals of our trip around Wales.
This place understands that all you need sometimes is a simple menu done really well and great customer service to keep people coming back. We ordered an nduja pizza and a caesar salad which sounds basic, both warranted a little “wow” upon arrival. Service was fast, slick and incredibly friendly.
You’re also able to bring dogs at lunchtime and our Basset Hound, Colin, was given plenty of fuss and treats. It is quite a small venue though that gets very busy, so if you have a large dog or one that struggles to settle, it may be worth doing a little recce before booking.
Well done though team Canteen – You’re knocking it out the park!

We always visit The Canteen when we are down in the area, it's always been amazing a d very chilled. Sadly this visit was far from that. We entered and there was a table of 6 having a birthday meal, and a table of 2. We sat down at a table for 4, the table in the window we usually sit at, had 'reserved' on it, but no-one came to sit there before closing !
We ordered our drinks and food. There was a wait of about 15mins for our starter of just one plate of dough balls. Whilst eating these, a gentleman came in an ordered 2 pizzas to take away. He then left the restaurant.
Our starter plate was cleared away. Then a couple came in and sat on a table next to us and they ordered food.
We then waited near 30mins to get our pizzas. I went to the desk to enquire where our food was, as it was such a long wait since our starters, and the chap who had come in and ordered a 'take away, had come back in and got his pizzas, even though he ordered a good 15mins after us.
We were told there was a delay on our pizzas as they had to do the take away order.
To say I was furious was an understatement, I had to walk away from the desk !
Eventually our pizzas arrived, as did the pizzas for the couple say next to us, who had come in, sat down and ordered at least 20mins after we'd ordered.
I was so cross that the chef/staff put the take away order in before us, which left us sitting twiddling our thumbs for nearly half and hour between starter and main, especially as there were only 2 other tables with people on, and we had two young children with us.
At no point did any staff come over and explain that our food would be delayed, due to them having to put the take away order through.
To add insult to injury, I'd ordered a make your own with serano ham, mozzarella, red onion and rocket. The overriding taste was that of onion, as that was the main ingredient on the pizza, piled up in places. There was hardly and serano ham or mozzarella.
I wanted to go up and complain, but after such a long wait, I was too cross and felt I would really lose my rag with them, which I really didn't want to happen in front of my children.
We were left really disappointed, especially as we really look forward to our visits there as it is usually superb.
Not really sure what else to add.

Not sure if the chap came in the order the takeaway was a local and as such got preference over us, who knows?
All I know is that 30mins between a dough balls starter and your main meal pizza is far too long and unacceptable, and one where I really shouldn't have to go and ask where our food is.

Family of 5 enjoyed these delicious pizzas. Great selection of toppings. The restaurant is open for take away pizza only on certain days, due to COVID - best to check their website. Plan ahead as this little place is popular 😀

We four Dutchmen arrived in Newport on a hike along the magnificent Welsh coast, and by then felt more than ready to leave behind the fish-and-chips routine. The Canteen proved the perfect alternative. Their affordable menu really hit the spot, with original pizza choices, just the deserts you crave, and original beers (though no draft, if I am not mistaken). And then there's the staff, who seemed to combine fun with hard work and created exactly the sort of atmosphere that makes you remember your evening. Thank you, fine Canteen people!

We’ve ordered from here twice during lockdown and neither time has disappointed! We ordered the Welsh Italian, the Butternut, the Ultracomida and the Chicken run. The pizzas were as good and fresh as ever, with the dough balls being the star of the show. We loved every mouthful!
Safe pick up service also!

We stopped at this lil quaint cafe in Newtown just for a drink, as neither of us were hungry, but the smell was alluring and authentic. We asked for 2 caramel iced lattes which was greeted with a smile from the lovely Italian lady, altho the item was not listed on the menu. I'm so glad they agreed to make them coz the chap with the mad afro made them to perfection 👍 doggo friendly 😁

It’s great that places like this are producing first rate food despite the difficult situation just now . The bases were perfect & the choice of toppings interesting. My leek/onion/welsh cheese was excellent & my husband raved about his fishy one . Good size too , there’s enough left for our picnic tomorrow .

Pizza is absolutely awesome. I had butternut pizza. Great to see something different and it really works. Other half had pepperoni & caramelised red onion with a side of garlic mayo. Again both were so yummy. If I really had to find something to complain about ….. too big a portion of mayo!😂. Staff were lovely and obviously enjoy working together. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area. They do takeaway too

🤤 pizzas. Efficient service and collection. My parents hadn’t eaten pizzas in many years but were bowled over by the mackerel and goats cheese pizzas. My husband and I love love loved the Tulum and spicy 🌶 pepperoni. Crispy bases and unctuous toppings. What’s not to love ❤️

The Canteen delivers consistently great pizza year round. It's a family favorite for any occasion. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, with the highest level of customer service, we've never had a bad dish. Their commitment to local and high quality food and drinks is great and we can't recommend them enough.
Interesting and delicious starters, salads and specials accompany consistently great quality pizza and their dough balls are like little clouds of heaven! Awesome milkshakes and delicious deserts are just more things they do to the highest quality.
Great local beers round off this friendly restaurant experience.

Great ambience and fantastic pizza, we haven't had such a good pizza since we were in Italy!!Run by a group of really nice guys who work as a well-oiled team. The place is obviously popular as it was packed within minutes of the doors being opened and takeaway orders were coming in thick and fast. However, that didn't detract from the excellent service customers were receiving in-house. Highly recommended.

Our pizzas were delicious and very tasty. Stone baked bases were just right. Ordered our takeaway and within 20 minutes we were sat eating them. Brilliant service, friendly staff and contactless payment made ordering and collection very easy and quick. Thank you.

30 plus people gathered to celebrate Bryan's birthday. Family and friends all enjoyed some great pizzas, sides, starters and desserts.
The staff were all friendly, efficient and worked so hard, with us all sitting in but takeouts as well.
Thank you for a fantastic night. We will definitely be back 😁
