This bustling restaurant serves excellent Argentine cuisine in a engaging setting. For a visitor to Buenos Aires the Puerto Rico is an excellent way to see life in the city as the Argentines live it. Lunch is a particularly good time. Expect large portions for the sandwiches and other offerings. The service is good but it can get very busy.... More

We arrived in Buenos Aires early in the morning but due to an airport workers strike had to wait at the airport 3 hours to get our luggage. By the time we got checked in at the hotel and rested a few hours we were all hungry. We arrived about 6:30 PM and ordered pizza just in time for the... More

We came upon this place around 2 PM when locals find that it is much too early for lunch. We had a liter of beer and shared a sandwich. It was enough to tide us over and to leisurely absorb the atmosphere. Clearly a place for locals, the guy at the door gave us the once-over before deigning to allow... More

Lovely bygone era feel to this cafe restaurant in terms of decor and service. Worth going if only to have a coffee.

We came here for lunch as we explored the area (it's near the Recoleta cemetery). It was full of locals which is always a good sign and the meals were large, reasonably priced, and very good. As it was so busy, we were waiting for around 15 minutes for a table. This problem could have been improved had the tables... More

This cafe, which is one of the oldest in Buenos Aires, is where you will find locals lined up for coffee and facturas (pastries) in the morning before work. The service is exceptional if you choose to sit (but many wait in line for their morning fix).

This restaurant has the very special charm of a place where time stood still. It is easy to imagine that patrons enjoyed their meals in the same setting a generation ago. The food was good and the prices reasonable. The service was friendly as well. Make sure to bring some time and enjoy the atmosphere.

This spot was the rendezvous for our walking tour. The waiters were very nice and accommodating. Our breakfast cake and coffee were nice and it was reasonably priced. There was no pressure to order anything else. We therefore returned for lunch a couple of days later after walking the street market. We had a tasty pasta lunch which was a... More

Came across La Puerto Rico by chance and so glad we did. You feel like you have gone back in time as soon as you enter the cafe. It has a lovely feel to the place and the waiters make you feel welcome. Huge choice of pastries and the coffee is great.

We wandered in for a late lunch after seeing the chalkboard sign at the street corner in the middle of the Sunday crafts market. We enjoyed the atmosphere more than the spinach pasta that was well past al dente but the sauce had decent flavor. The curry sauce with grilled chicken (generous portion) was a nice surprise. The crusty bread... More

Staying in Montserrat

Neighbourhood Profile
Montserrat
As part of the historic quarter of Buenos Aires, Montserrat is defined by the historical events that took place there and the landmarks that have stood the test of time. The Plaza de Mayo is at the center of this connection to history: countless public demonstrations have passed through this square, going back to the May Revolution of 1810. Walking the streets of Montserrat allows us to imagine what Buenos Aires may have looked like in the past: the Cabildo takes us back to the late 16th century, while the Palacio Barolo and the traditional cafés carry us to the early 20th. Nowadays, the neighbourhood is inundated every day by office workers, buses, and taxis; still, the cobblestones, narrow sidewalks, and subway stations from the 1910s remind us that we are surrounded by history everywhere we look.
