We've eaten here before and usually have a salad and entree. This time we tried pupusas. They have a lot of dough and not much inside like queso and veggies. The place was busy as usual.

I like their pupusas (chicken and cheese) and usually get plantain/black bean/sour cream. My husband likes their chicken soup which comes with a piece of grilled chicken with rice and tortillas. In addition they always have their version of Salvadoran coleslaw and a tomato sauce with slight spiciness at the table. Their dishes are big, service is very efficient. This... More

If you crave authentic flavors of Salvador, this pupuseria is the perfect choice. The wide array of pupusa combinations makes this place worth checking out over several days. Great lunch time place to visit with colleagues and friends. Also a good place to host evening events if you wish to invite a number of people out for food, drink and... More

I asked her why? "Because I would not come here on my own and I've never heard of it." Its her 2nd semester and UCB and she hasn't heard of it. lol. We came and we waited because seating was limited. Hostess and waiters alike were polite enough to apologize for the wait. It was no big deal since we... More

We rode the BART to Downtown Berkeley to explore and have dinner, so glad we picked Platano to eat. The restaurant is nothing fancy, but the food and staff are outstanding! Seems like a friendly, family restaurant. Many options on the menu to choose from with a Central and South American flavor. We tried several items to share and each... More

Highly recommend this restaurant. I ordered two small plates from their gluten free menu: plateles (deep fried -yum- corn dumplings filled with chicken and veggies) and fried plantains with beans and cream. Both were wonderful. The staff was great. My son, a vegan was happy with his meal as well. Unpretentious and welcoming. Eat here.

We went last night, September 2, 2016, for a minor celebration, and we talked around and checked out other nearby restaurants on University Avenue, which has many, many offerings. My friend had never had pupusas before, so we decided that Platano was the best choice. We were quite delighted with our experience there. The wait staff were all so friendly... More

We went in there by chance, trying to find a place that our family could enjoy. Our waiter was patient and recommended combinations for us, getting french fries for the kids was no problem even though it wasn't on the menu. We had steak and shrimps, got rice, beanrice, french fries and sallads as sides. Amazing level for prices at... More

Loved this restaurant. Everything was fresh and so tasty. The service was great and considerate. They brought me a picture menu to help me choose what to get since it was my first time there. I ordered a side of refried beans to go with my #9 dinner since I am on a quest to find the best refried in... More

If you're looking for excellent, authentic, homemade-tasting Central American food, at a reasonable price, Platano is the place. Nicely off the beaten path (from Shattuck) on University, this low-key place is busy for a reason. And people with gluten-free needs, like my wife, have good options. Although cross-contamination is always a concern, her food here was handled with extreme care.... More
