If you've lived in Japan, SF, or Manhattan, then you know that none of the sushi joints in San Diego can compare. As such, I'm rating Kaito solely as to how it compares to sushi places in SD. i.e., compared to Kabuto in Las Vegas, Kaito would get 1 star. Yes, Kaito has its quirks as they are very particular... I know Sushi Ono is supposed to be the best but this place is smaller, more intimate and has friendly helpful staff. The sushi is delicious and there is a good variety of fish available.

Eater.com rated this the best restaurant in San Diego...not just best sushi restaurant...but ANY kind of restaurant. I can see why. It was light and artfully created. Different from any other sushi I've had. I wanted to order everything on the menu! And the prices are reasonable...I'm proud it's in my neighborhood!

Great sushi bar for omakase, that is trust the chef to select something excellent. I learned this was the way to go at a top bar in LA that was 5 minutes from my house. Very few sushi places do this well... usually safe or unimaginative. Went to Kaito last night for the first time and trusted our chef, Joe.... More

The sushi was good, but I felt like it was a little overpriced. $12 for a roll seemed a little expensive. The service was quick and the restaurant was clean. We had a group of 9 and they seated us promptly without a reservation.

I was referred to this restaurant by a couple of japanese friends of mine. Somewhat hard to find, as it is located in a section of a mall. Very low key, so make sure you google the address. It is a small but cozy place run by husband and japanese wife and 2 main chefs behind the sushi bar. We... More

I would have give them a better rating if I am just reviewing their food. They have very good sushi, fresh fish and tender texture. However the service was unexpectedly SLOW!! We waited for 40 minutes after we placed order without being served. I had to ask the waitress twice how much longer we had to wait, each time she... More

We're huge sushi fans. Fish quality was a bit above average. My wife ordered uni (sea urchin), $9 per order. Sushi chef for some reason took the liberty of giving us two orders, which we didn't realize til we got the bill. His explanation? - "there were two of you." Argued with us in very broken English. Apologized, but didn't... More

One of a few Japanese restaurants that is not owned by some pretenders. If you don't like "sweet" sushi or restaurants that have no respect for Japanese food, you will love this place. The sushi chefs and staff are very nice and they prepare the dishes to your satisfaction. For appetizer, I highly recommend beef tongue. For sushi, you can't... More

During our time in Encinitas , we came upon this unassuming little sushi restaurant in a strip mall. I enjoyed a fresh and delicious selection of sushi. They even had live scallops, you have the main body as sushi, they cook the other little bits in a light broth - delicous and very authentic. My favorite was a marinated slice... More
