Well known by locals and dearly loved. This is the place that I return to year after year. The best Margaritas and Fernando's Burrito (yum!). You just can't go wrong with Albondigas or a tostada. Got to ask for the Diablo and other wonderful house salsas. Taco Tuesdays! The crew work as a team so you can ask all the... More

This is a good place to go for basic old school Mexican food. Things like burritos, enchiladas, combo plates and huge burritos. Prices are very reasonable for a West-side restaurant and the service is good. However, the margaritas are not that good. Better to stick with beer. Also there is no dessert on the menu -- no flan, no churros,... More

People who say LA has no soul, or it's all trendy have never been to Gilbert's. The family run place employs family members and the food is super reasonable and plentiful. The pickled carrots, the diablo sauce, the no-charge ice tea with breakfast -- it's all part of the charm. Try and find celebrities on the pictures that decorate the... More

The place says "welcome" even before you open the back door off the parking lot. Customers are mostly regulars...even though an 8AM opening time is not for the early birds. The Huevos Rancheros will clear your sinuses and give you a tasty way to get rolling. Coffee flows freely...pun intended as it is included in most breakfasts. Wait staff efficient... More

My sister took my family and I to Gilberts and I was so glad to finally go! She had been telling me about it for over 25 years! Great food, cheap and I loved the ambience. We went in the middle of Winter on a Tuesday night and there was still a wait to be seated - that says it... More

I've come here on and off for years despite the fact that it's not the closest Mexican restaurant. Always excellent food and helpful, pleasant servers. Not too salty or greasy like some others. Not fancy, but I don't need fancy. We just took out-of-town guests and they loved it too. Actually my favorite is the marinated carrots and salsa they... More

While on vacation, we stumbled upon this staple that has been at the same location for over 40 years. The chips and salsa were amazing and everything was served fresh. My wife has chicken fajitas while I had carnitas. Rice and beans were tasty as well. Staff was friendly and we are glad we found this quiet little place. Highly... More

It being a family owned and operated local business, I always look forward to eating at Gilbert's. I had a smaller version of the super burrito with chicken, and I was stuffed. No matter what I have to do in Los Angeles, I always make room in my schedule for Gilberts. If you like hot salsa, ask for the diablo... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
