At first glance, this appears to be a kitschy, touristy spot, that you’re not sure is worthy of its high prices. Don’t be fooled. This is a Very Good restaurant in a fabulous location, overlooking the lights of suburban Denver. The menu is predominantly beef,...bison and other game; all cooked well and large portions. The sides are excellent including the salad. The appetizers are both interesting and tasty, like the Peanut butter stuffed jalapeños. The service was friendly, although a bit understaffed for a busy Saturday night. Note they do not have a bar area, so if you arrive early you will need to find a place to sit and flag down a bar person to assist.More

Let's just say that if you are on a bit of a budget do not even think of going here. Also, if you are the type that won't be more adventurous than ordering a beef steak, prices are much better elsewhere. However, should you be...willing to try something different, this place is a real treat. My friend and I shared the stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer ($15). They were probably the best I have ever had anywhere. For dinner, my friend ordered a half rack of buffalo ribs ($45) and they were excellent. I ordered the Fort Plate ($59), which consisted of a large medallion of buffalo, a large medallion of elk, and a quail. Both entrees came with an amazing salad. We choose the homemade vinaigrette dressing. Both also came with potatoes and vegetables. Neither of us had any room for dessert. The menu also offers other native American dishes such as buffalo tongue, which I have never seen on a menu. If you are having a special occasion or feel you deserve a real treat I highly recomment The Fort. Oh yes, my menu did not have prices on it. There are some that do, however.More

We arrived on time with a reservation on a Saturday evening. Apparently, they were overrun by diners or understaffed or both. We are sympathetic to both conditions and willing to wait in most situations, but the staff was so rude that we decided to leave...before even being seated. We exchanged few words with the hostess and did not complain, so it wasn't a matter of a hostile situation. Rather, we were so put off by how poorly she managed her own job that we decided to cut our losses and head out before we spent good money on a bad experience. Some advice that seems unnecessary for a restaurant staff but would surely be warranted for The Fort staff: DO: Greet guests when they arrive, even if to just say hello. After the name for a reservation is given, acknowledge the presence of the guest, perhaps even by name. If there will be a wait, please acknowledge that and give some ballpark estimate. Better yet, offer an apology for the wait, however brief. DON'T: Suddenly disappear for 5 minutes without saying a word after the guest gives their name. Return to the host station, ignore the guest, and whisper behind your hand for several minutes, still without acknowledging the guest. Skip over waiting guests to seat other guests who arrive later without reservations This advice would serve the hostess and her co-workers well.More

The Fort is a Colorado institution. Although it's been there since the '60s, we haven't visited in many years because, well, it is pricey. But the atmosphere is fun with many points of interest and it's really more of an experience than just a restaurant....Modeled after Bent's Fort in southern CO and sitting above Denver just up in the foothills, this large adobe structure includes a huge courtyard with teepees and other interests, and the back side of the restaurant faces Denver with a beautiful covered patio, fire pits, and views of Denver. (There's also a helipad but you'll have to ask them about that. ) The food was excellent and the menu is extensive with unusual offerings of meat and wild game, plus a wide choice of unique appetizers like peanutbutter stuffed jalapenos, bone marrow, pickled quail eggs wrapped in sausage, and more. All we tried were delicious. For entrees, the steaks were grilled perfectly with just a little crisp on the outside and the vegetarian Poblano stuffed with mushroom risotto and succotash was an interesting surprise of flavors. Its usually not a good idea to go vegetarian at a steak and wild game restaurant, but it was so good with a combination of flavors I would never have put together. The service was well above average too. We truly enjoyed our experience The Fort.More

I’ve been going to The Fort for almost fifty years but sadly not recently. At our visit last week, we were thrilled to see that the quality of the food, great scenic setting and atmosphere, and the great quirky menu are as good or even...better than ever. That alone should be enough to definitely recommend the restaurant most highly. Plus despite it’s market position as a “special occasion restaurant” means most tables are celebrating some personal event, the incessant singing of “Happy Birthday” or other affectations by the waitstaff no longer is occurring to disturb the other diners. But, last week’s otherwise wonderful meal was spoiled by what appeared to be institutional up-selling. Upon our being seated, the server brought an appetizer and specialty cocktail menu and hurriedly demanded that we order drinks and appetizers and then immediately ran off. She came back twice with the same apparently rehearsed routine until we requested the entree menu from a passing buser. The appetizer menu was left on our table for over another 15 minutes before we had an opportunity to make a second request. Rather than comply we were asked if we “were sure” we didn’t want to order starters and drinks. Eventually the waitress delivered the mains menu, again requesting our appetizer and cocktail orders, and when she relented and was ready to take our dinner orders proclaimed every menu item to be “fantastic” including steamed potatoes and steamed vegetables. While we have traveled extensively and are not easily intimidated, younger couples at the nearby tables clearly were. Even then one couple requesting half orders of the costly appetizers was repeatedly told, “No!”, with no alternative offered. Shame to see that such an otherwise fantastic restaurant apparently has decided to resort to such manipulative tactics.More

had heard of The Fort on one of those food shows on tv, we don't even know which one but the experience far overshadowed the image we got from the media. The menu is comprehensive but not exhaustive, but the setting is the spectacle. While...approaching on the highway my wife saw the site and was immediately charmed. Upon arrival we were taken aback (we are big city people) by how pleasant, and well trained each staff member was. Everyone we encountered presented a genuineness that was lovely. The food was, of course amazing, bison, elk, quail egg appetizer, paired with unique cocktails and a lovely wine list. If we are ever in this region again, we will make The Fort a must on the tour plan.More

I wish it was possible to give The Fort six stars! Here’s how I’d break it down. The historic fort, the location, and the ambiance? Five stars. The service? Five stars. The menu? Five stars. But all those categories are far overshadowed by the meal...you’ll enjoy. Elk, buffalo, lamb, duck, quail, salmon, and beef, each prepared masterfully for a dinner you’ll not forget. And there a few other gems on the menu that are yours to discover. (Did I mention roasted bison marrow bones and the peanut butter stuffed jalapeños?) The rating? Six stars! Our four visits have each been wonderful, and The Fort has become one of our faves for a fun, delicious Colorado dinner.More

We went to The Fort in a large group. We were given special tour through the rooms and a great deal of history about the museum/restaurant. We loved it all. Appetizers of chip and guacamole were absolutely delicious. We had a set meal of Beef...Ribs and Chicken. The ribs were great, the chicken was on the dry side. Too much for one meal anyway. Dessert was a jalapeno chocolate cake that was "interesting". They also had a creme brulee that was delicious!More

Were here a few days ago. I asked what the Fort potatoes were and the waitress I believed mentioned something about caramelized onions. Since I wasn't interested in that, I asked if they could sub the mashed potatoes. Fine. What I received, and others at...our table, were mashed potatoes with some kind of chili sauce. Terrible. Don't mess with my mashed potatoes. If you are going to wreck them with some kind of spicy sauce, you need to tell the customer!! I wasn't the only person at my table that was unhappy with the mashed potatoes. Then the seasonal vegetables - was one corn on the cob!! Really?? I can have that at home. I didn't pay to have a $54 entree and corn on the cob! Corn on the cob is not fine dining. Kentucky Fried Chicken at least gives you corn kernels. And note the menu states vegetables - plural. One corn on the cob is not plural. I expected something more from a restaurant of this caliber and was sadly disappointed.More

Wow! Is the word that comes to mind to describe The Fort. Unique, fabulous, and delicious are also adjectives that aptly describe The Fort. We were in Colorado visiting my daughter & son-in-law and made a reservation for this place. We were all first timers....Walking from parking lot to entrance is a feast for the eyes- full size teepees, statues and the architecture is very ‘Old West’. We were greeted by Kevin who took great care of us all evening. He answered any questions we had and provided suggestions when asked. The food and drink were excellent. There is soft flute music playing. I can’t name one dish but the guacamole and chips were great as a starter plus the stuffed mushrooms. Example of a main course that was incredible is the NY Strip Steak with delicious potatoes and snow pea pods. Almost forgot to mention the bread-omg- outrageous also served with pumpkin mini muffins. I could go on and on but want the reader to make a reservation for The Fort now. Seriously , between the food, the ambiance and Kevin’s TLC, we are now officially spoiled and love it❤️More

In the last 26 years, I've been to The Fort only 3 times. Each time I have had a bad experience. So I've waited almost a decade then tried again. No more. Went last night with my fiancé. Neither of us enjoyed the experience. The...stuffed mushrooms had little flavor besides sour cream and bacon. The guacamole was mostly onion and tomato - where was the avocado? Dinner rolls were too salty. Salmon was not grilled (pan fried?), terribly dry, and without flavor. Wild rice was terribly dry and without flavor. Mac and cheese just tasted like noodles - no FLAVOR!! Out of all the mixed drinks they offered, we could only find two that even mildly appealed to us, both of which tasted pretty bad (we suffered through those). I had a Buffalo steak which was edible but not great (I make much tastier steaks at home), and the grilled shrimp were fine although nothing special about them. For the quality food we got, prices were outrageous. We also found it dark and not particularly romantic. There was nothing elegant or special about the interior of the restaurant. It's just a standard restaurant that charges a huge amount of money for substandard food. No, thank you. This was my fiancé's first time there. We were anticipating a fantastic experience. We got everything but that. It will be the last time to The Fort for both of us.More
