My husband and I searched up a place for breakfast while vacationing in Maine and being late risers, were glad to find Mae's Cafe served breakfast all day(until closing at 2 pm). We almost drove by it as we came from 209, because Mae's sits on the corner of 209 and Centre St. We went in the side door, which we didn't realize, and stood for awhile waiting to be seated until my husband ventured a little farther into the restaurant, and found the front entrance. We were then seated promptly into a light airy room with plenty of distancing(yes, this was during COVID). I had the Mae's Monte, which was delicious and filling. I could only eat 1/2 of it as I didn't want to leave any of the lightly seasoned home fries behind. My husband's breakfast was "Morse's Mountain" which included 2 small blueberry or plain pancakes and of course, I took a bite of his wild blueberry pancakes, which were a little sweet...almost like a blueberry cake. The service was prompt and our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The prices were a little higher than we usually pay, but it was well worth it! We went on a Monday and the place was very busy. I can imagine what it would be like on the weekend. If we had stayed in the area longer, I would have tried it for lunch or bought some of their yummy pastries in the case in the foyer of the entrance.

We came for a late breakfast on a Tuesday and the place was hopping at 10:30. Only a 15 minute wait. With that many patrons we knew it would be good. Portions are very generous. French toast was awesome and omelettes are light and fluffy with ingredients well dispersed. Will be back to try the cinnamon rolls.

On my way home I decided on Breakfast in Bath, Maine and came across May's Cafe and Bakery. Very clean, friendly staff, cheerful atmosphere and outstanding Blueberry Pancakes. They could have been a little more generous with the syrup but because I was running late I didn't ask for extra. The bakery looked very appealing and they had the most adorable handmade fairies for sale. Made out of natural findings like pinecones etc. Couldn't resist.

I've had lunch here many times, but today I ordered a burger medium rare with fries. I got a mealy well done burger with no fries. Along with the burger were pale pinkish slices of ersatz tomato, a large pile of lettuce, and a tiny cup of slaw. The waiter was nice enough to comp this subpar meal- it pays to complain if your $17 burger is poorly prepared and made with inferior ingredients. An instant read thermometer would help, as would serving the good local tomatoes that are so plentiful this time of year.

Slow service, poorly prepared food and the coffee cup couldn’t get much smaller. I understand that many places are understaffed, but no one likes lukewarm eggs, and burnt hash browns. I ordered the Hunter’s Breakfast to try the corn beef hash. Nothing special but edible. I told the waitress I declined the toast “so not to waste it as I won’t eat it”. The toast arrived anyway piled on top of the eggs and hash browns and eggs. Waitress apologized. I asked for ketchup and it didn’t come so I had to ask again. By then the meal was unappealing. I won’t ever eat breakfast there again, but the pastries looked good.

The menu and prices on their website do NOT reflect what’s actually on the menu. I had a Mae’s omelette that was mediocre at best, and the hash browns didn’t arrive until I had eaten most of the omelette. Coffee is of good quality, but the cup barely holds 4 oz for $3. Our water glasses were never refilled, nor was my coffee. I have had the corn beef hash and it’s fatty and tough. Couldn’t eat it. If want to enjoy something there, stick to a bakery item, but go down the street to Cafe Creme for great coffee.

I research Rubens for fun, and this one is excellent. It's got thick slices of corned beef, and proper amounts of slaw and sauce. Purists may argue the sandwich is too thick but the high quality of the ingredients shows through. It's served with better than average potato chips and tangy cole slaw.

Stopped in while on a lighthouse road trip and I have mixed feelings on the food here. The clam chowder was FANTASTIC! The clams were tender and delicious. Now my sandwich on the other hand was disappointing - I had the turkey wi/ cheddar & Cranberry relish. The turkey appeared to be lunchmeat slices and the cranberry relish seemed like it came from a jar…not great. My mom had the Blueberry stuffed French Toast and she really enjoyed that. Service was quick & efficient. The deserts looked lovely but we didn’t try any.

I had heard only good things about this place and was quite disappointed. I had been in the space since it was Christina's in the 80's. They used the space much better. Mae's has jammed as many tables as possible into the space so one has any breathing room whatsoever. We had a reservation for 10am on a Sunday. I will always try the corn beef hash on any brunch menu as I am partial to it. They were already out of it despite the fact they have two item on the menu that are centered around cornbeef hash and, again, it was 10 in the morning. The staff was trying their best but they were hopelessly understaffed and the kitchen was not what you would describe as "short-order". Needless to say it took forever to get our food. We usually go to Schoolhouse in Harpswell but they are closed for the season. My mother and I agree that the pancakes at Schoolhouse are fair superior. These pancakes were small and rubbery. Hollandaise sauce was thin and tasteless. The bakery is good. Potatoes and breakfast meats also tasty. This place could be as good as people say it is if: They used the room better, they got and/or used their staff more efficiently and they had a chef with more skill and imagination. Probably will not be back.

Very pleasant place for breakfast. We’ve had breakfast here twice and it’s been very good. I have had an omelette and corn beef hash and eggs and my wife has had an egg sandwich and the quiche. All great. The cappuccino coffee is weak. So this is probably not the best place for you if you’re a coffee lover but the food is excellent

Solid three (that’s not bad…). I’d actually do 3.5 if that was an option. Since it’s not, I’m rounding up to four. I’ve wanted to visit Mae’s for a while but they’ve been closed the couple of times I stopped by, previously. Yesterday was the day. The outdoor porch seating is lovely. I picked a corner table. Our steak and mushroom omelets were fine but nothing “special” per se. The sourdough was good. I really enjoyed the homefries. They were out of corned beef hash - the main reason we stopped in - chicken sausage and squash. Our waiter was proficient but not really friendly. The bakery items looked amazing but I can’t vouch for anything but their looks. I didn’t buy any.

We're almost always disappointed by both the baked goods and service. We've tried Mae's a few times over the years, and with the exception of the first time, always been disappointed. Got pastries for a wedding, and everyone thought they were disappointing; recently stopped for coffee and both dumped out our lattes. And they're just not that nice, it always seems like a favor that they're even talking to you.

Came in on a busy Sunday for breakfast and it was really good. We both liked the coffee and she had a veggie omelette and I had the breakfast quesadilla- both were fresh and delicious. Only issue was that it took almost an hour to get our food so we had to have it boxed and eat it in the car as we were going to miss our flight! But it was very good food and we wished we were able to enjoy it at the cute restaurant. The staff were super nice and apologetic and threw in some cookies to apologize for the wait and I will say those cookies were ridiculously good! I would certainly give this place another try when we return. The food and friendly staff are worth the effort!

Under new ownership and management, Mae's has begun offering pre fixe dinners for special occasions. Most recently: Valentine's Day Weekend. The menu included a complimentary cocktail or mocktail, wine, sweet/tart salad, mussels, a main course of either poached salmon or filet mignon, and dessert of either flourless chocolate cake or raspberry cream. Price was moderate. Service delightful, Each dish was a delight. Atmosphere enhanced by light jazz music in the background. A real boost to the area's culinary choices.

Friend and I were waiting for them to reopen from there winter break. They do the best corn beef hash and eggs on the mid coast. Real beef not canned. They have tables distanced and clean. FYI I got my brides last birthday cake there and it was the best.
