J.R. Maxwell & Co. is an independent restaurant, not a chain. Yes, we are the place where everybody knows your name. Our black angus steaks are all cut here at Maxwells. We even cook our own potato chips and make our own cheese sticks and onion rings. Our homemade deserts include creme Brulee, Key Lime pie, frozen peanut butter pie, and Indian Pudding. All of our salad dressings are made here, our soups are homemade, and Our homemade sauces include Newberg, supreme, tartar, cocktail, and an Alfredo sauce to die for.
My husband and I had dinner at J.R. Maxwell's in the last 9 week. I like to eat healthy and, unless I am travelling, almost always prefer to cook my own meals at home, but I am very happy with the choices at J.R. Maxwell's....The prices are fair too, particularly given the quality of the food. I especially love the fish specials. The vegetables are cooked well. For example, the broccoli side was lightly steamed and served without salt or butter, absolutely perfect! It is rare to get good veggies at a restaurant. Kaylee (I hope I spelled this correctly) was our waitress 5 out of 6 times. She is incredibly nice. We met one of the owners Ed Rogers, he too is a super nice guy. I can't say enough good about this restaurant.More
For many many years we would go to Maxwell's on Friday or Saturday when we needed a real treat: their prime rib was the best in the midcoast. Last night we went, fortunately with a reservation (those without waited 40 minutes or so because of...understaffing). We ordered a bottle of wine and prime rib (now at $32). The wine didn't come. The wee loaf of bread didn't come. My salad didn't come--but the "prime rib" did come. I'm not sure it was prime rib. We had ordered it medium rare, but it was beyond well-done, and my wife's piece was very thin. The popover was as good as ever and the server was nice and worked hard. But who want to pay $32 for a piece of shoe leather? When your signature dish is no longer worth eating, what do we think of you. Maxwell's?More
Place was very busy, but as we arrived late we had no issue getting a table. I can't say much about the non-seafood dishes, as we all ordered either seafood or lobster, but those dishes were well prepared and tasty. The clam chowder was very...tasty, maybe slightly too much potato and less of the seafood in there. Overall a great place to have dinner, service was very friendly, wines are moderately priced with some good options.More
We visited JR Maxwell based on other Trip Advisor reviews and we were pleasantly surprised. We had a party of 5 and all of us agreed that both the food and service were great.
The restaurant has an extensive and varied menu and we enjoyed...the wide range of available choices.
Service too was great and the cheerful attitude of our server made our visit all the more pleasant.
We highly recommend this restaurant to travelers through the Bath area.More
Sat at the bar a couple of times and ate during a visit to Maine. I should give it a 5 review just because they were open and serving! Sunday through Tuesday in Bath was a struggle to find a restaurant. We really appreciated they...were open!
Food and service were very good.More
I do understand that the place was busy and they may have been short-staffed, but our food should not be served to us tepid—my mashed potatoes, candied carrots, and Amaretto haddock were not even warm. My husband had clam chowder, which he said was good,...and just warm, not hot. He also had stuffed haddock with candied carrots. I had ordered an ale when we first sat down, and it took over half an hour to get it. I think our server may have forgotten to put my order in. As I said, they were busy so I can forgive slow service but not tepid food. We won’t go back.More
