The Blue Moon Cafe is a nice restaurant for a pleasant breakfast. It has seating in the back that's right off the harbor, which is really nice. You place your order with a cashier after a short wait on a line. Then, you get a numbered stand-up sign you put on your table. There's also seating in the front on picnic style tables, just off the street and inside the restaurant. The entire staff is very friendly. Portion sizes are fairly small, particularly on egg dishes. The food is well prepared and tasty. Sandwiches on bagels are also fairly tightly portion controlled. Base prices are pretty reasonable. But, for a person like me ... who likes his meals a certain way ... there's very little flexibility without seeing somewhat annoying "add on" charges ... literally for any change to a menu item. For example, on one morning I ordered an egg sandwich on a bagel. The listed price on the menu was, I believe, $5.50. But, the sandwich came with Swiss cheese, which I didn't want. I asked that my bagel be toasted and that I have a piece of onion, a tomato and an onion slice on it. The overall cost of that plus a cup of coffee came to somewhere around $12. I asked the girl at the register how the price rose so much. She said that she was instructed to add a $3 charge for any changes from the menu. Now, I can understand an up-charge for say the lettuce, tomato and onion if they weren't factored into the basically reasonable $5.50 charge. But, the change fee for what most restaurants will do as a matter of course to suit a customer's taste seemed like it broke the 11th Commandment, which I insist the staff in my company never do: "Though shalt not punish thy customer." Maybe the girl at the register got it wrong. But, this was consistent with the up-charges I received with minor requests on the other two times I had enjoyable breakfasts at the Blue Moon during my stay. Again, I have no problem with passing on expenses. It's just that my normal restaurant experience is that the goal of most places I frequent is to please my palate without a punishment charge for my deviating slightly from a posted menu. My bottom line is that I enjoyed the restaurant, the harborside seating, the friendly staff and their tasty food. I do recommend the Blue Moon Cafe to people visiting Boothbay Harbor.

Hello Dalefarkas ~ Thank you for taking the time for the review and we are pleased you visited us several times on your recent trip to Boothbay Harbor. I would like to clarify your statement about the upcharges. You ordered an Egg a Bagel which come with swiss cheese for $5.50. You also ordered coffee for $2.75 which is refillable as often as you like and then there was the 8% sales tax. Then you made changes to it which we charge $1.00 - $1.50 for depending on the complexity of the change. You then added 2 addition items to it which were not factored into the original cost. Now I think you can see how the total came to $12ish. We do not "punish the customer" and we are always happy to make the food the way you want it. The reason for the charge, is because it is very hard on the chefs when there are changes and this slows down the process. As you may have noticed, we are a very busy restaurant and do our very best to please you. Stephanie

We visit Boothbay Harbor each year at this time from UK: we take breakfast every morning as soon it opens. We should have been there today, but we can’t get flights. We wish enjoyment to everybody fortunate to be there today. We believe the menu is maintained, great breakfast food: I like Hot Eggs! Their deck is the ONLY one right on the water in Boothbay Harbor. Even better are the people, Fred and Stephanie are the owners. Try it and you will leave with a smile on your face: you will return as we hope to do. Genuine place, genuine owners and most customers are the same.

After visiting the Blue Moon Café on a recent trip to Boothbay Harbor, I found myself leaving the restaurant with a full stomach and in a great mood. On top of the delicious breakfast (the sausage was my personal favorite), the atmosphere of the meal was amazing. Having breakfast on the waterfront was the perfect way to begin my day. Not to mention the unbelievable service. Not once did I feel like I had to struggle to get something that I needed. The employees were attentive, friendly, and from what I could tell overall good people. My experience was so enjoyable that I had to return later on my trip, but this time for lunch (which was an equally fantastic experience). I would recommend the Blue Moon Café to anyone visiting Boothbay Harbor who is looking for a friendly and fulfilling dining experience.

Upon entering the cafe feels as tho you will have great experience. Menu is diverse but the experience over rated. Upon sitting on the deck at a table of food and plates that didn’t get cleaned for 10 or so minutes, We waiting 32 minutes for our food and after asking where our food was twice, the women behind the counter decided to argue even after I saw them wondering where our ticket was. Food great, service bad

Went to this cafe during Windjammer days. It was crowded just before noon on a weekday, but there were tables available outside. Each of the two of us ordered sandwiches, mine was great (grilled veggie), my husband’s Turkey Melt Panini was good but a little light on the fillings. The big problem was that we waited more than 45 minutes after ordering, especially long when not all the tables outside were filled. Cup of chowder had excellent flavor, but could have used some thickening up, just a little watery.

Hello Stephanie 81013 ~ The prior 2 review had some accuracy and we met with the staff this morning to make some adjustments. But your review is out of line and incorrect. While all the tables were not occupied when you were there, did you know that we also do To Go orders? In fact, that day there were 3 orders of 6 sandwiches in front of your order. We cook everything from scratch, so it takes a little time unlike McDonald's. This is a hard summer for so many business in Maine. We have minimal staff with more visitors than ever before. Next time you write a negative review, please think about this and have all the correct information. Stephanie

We stopped by post-botanical garden visit for lunch and were completely delighted for so many reasons. The food was outstanding, but even more astounding was the attention taken to preparing a meal for a person (myself) with celiac. Pair that with a beautiful view of boats navigating the harbor and waitstaff who embraced two wiggly young children; we will be back. Again and again.

What a lovely review and thank you for the kind words. I thought you were going to say something about our giggly servers who I am sure loved engaging with your wiggly children. We are more than happy to make adjustments to our menu to help our guests. I am a big fan of taking a sandwich and putting it over a bed of lettuce instead of the bread.

On a recent five-night visit to Boothbay Harbor, I had breakfast at this charming little restaurant three times. Just next to the Balmy Days Dock, the restaurant is on the harbor and most tables have a splendid view. The décor is eclectic and typical of any seaside restaurant. Tables are inside, al fresco on a balcony overlooking the harbor, and in a small garden closer to the street. Most tables seat two to four people with only a few larger tables. This place is popular and there is almost always a line waiting for service. You order at the counter, take a number and your beverage to your table, and your breakfast is delivered pretty quickly. I love the menu here. The blueberry pancakes are the best; omelets are interesting and include a smoked salmon, cream cheese, and caper omelet which is superb; and eggs any style are done exactly as ordered. I can't say enough about the quality of this modestly priced menu. Arrive early for the seating locations. Enjoy!

Blue Moon Cafe is located perfectly in the midst of Boothbay Harbor tourist center, beautiful view of the water. Small charming very clean restaurant busier than usual due to Windjammer Festival. Stephanie took our order, told us that it would be a bit of a wait. No problem, just a few extra minutes. Food was delicious, very homey, Savannah came around and visited and to make sure everything was OK. Cute sign (took a picture) asked you to clear your own dishes, certainly understandable with short staff issues. Atmosphere was wonderful and added to our Boothbay visit. Encourage everyone to have breakfast or lunch there. Thanks so much!!

We came in mid-week looking for lunch. It was the tail end of the lunch period, maybe 1230 or 1245. We had a group of 7 but managed to find two tables indoors that we could put together. The girl working the counter seemed either confused or lethargic. Being from Georgia I'm used to extremely slow service, but this was something else. Our group ordered in 3 sets since we were 3 couples plus 1 child. When you order you're given a number on a stand to put on your table so they can find you when the food is ready. Despite sitting within 10 feet of the counter inside, the girl who brought the food out would walk right past us every time and head outside first attempting to find an owner for the food. So while we didn't get to enjoy the patio view of the harbor, our food all got the full tour. Paradoxically, the server attempted twice to bring us food that had been ordered by other people. When our orders did start to come out of the kitchen, the first order came out incomplete; the second order came out and they took the table number for the third order, so that when the 3rd order came out the server had an even harder time determining what table it went to. The food quality was adequate, not anything I would rave about. The burger I ordered, which I requested Medium Rare was well done, but that is a common error at restaurants. The burger supposedly came "with chips" and at Blue Moon that means they will put some in the bottom of the basket, a small enough "some" that you couldn't see them until you removed the burger, and as you might assume, they were both crushed by the burger and moistened by the juices of the burger (but hey at least the burger wasn't dried out, right?). All in all it was an underwhelming experiences and I can only assume the glowing reviews for Blue Moon must be based on Breakfast experiences or different staff.

Good Morning Blue Eyes Fam ~ First off, being a lover of rare burgers, I too would have been unhappy with a well done burger as well. We are sorry and will make some changes so this does not happen again. Next time, please let us know at the time so that we can correct the problem. While this is not an excuse, Boothbay has been extremely crowded this summer and we can hardly keep up with the demand. We can do better than being grumpy at the counter and confused when getting your food to you. We are sorry you did not have a great experience. Most often our customers are thrilled with the food and service. Stephanie

This is a big pass. Long wait. Veggie bake $7.95. Broccoli potatoes onions peppers and pale tomatoes. I am not a big eater but this was minuscule serving. Very disappointed. Now must find another place to order food. Side serving of “home fries” with order of eggs was several cubes of potatoes.

Hello BD ~ You are out of line! The few times (actually 9 to be exact) that we have had such a negative review, we were aware of the customer's dissatisfaction while at the Moon. You never said anything about not liking your meal. We would have been more than happy to give you something else to your liking. But, you chose to hide behind social media instead of speaking with us face to face. We have a total of 624 reviews. 381 are excellent, 171 are very good, 42 average, 17 poor and 9 terrible. I think your negative review may have more to do with your general unhappiness that day. By the way, $7.95 is a darn good deal for a good breakfast that includes plenty of home fries, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, spinach and broccoli. Please do take your business elsewhere.

We waited to order for at least 10 minutes and then the phone rang and he took their order first. Never once did he apologize for the wait or acknowledge we were there When we left he was rude and said thanks for waiting. And the people in front of us left too. I do not recommend . Also no one working there were wearing masks

We ordered a lobster roll and bowl of chowder. The chowder was okay, not amazing. Lobster roll was very small for the $35 price tag. We had lobster rolls at the High Roller in Portland a few days later that were much more generous and slightly cheaper. The sandwiches that others ordered looked okay, but I’d go elsewhere for a decent lobster roll.

SurfCat495 I think you wrote the review for the incorrect business. Our Lobster Rolls are not $35, they are $29.95. Furthermore they are really good as we pick the lobster fresh daily, add a little mayo and put in a toasted bun with lettuce. What is not to love?. Our guests rave about our homemade clam chowder as well. So again, I believe you intended this review for another business.

The old saying- “If you can’t say something good about somebody, don’t say anything at all” if applied here would prevent me from saying anything at all 🤨. But as this website requires a minimum number of characters, so be it. Attitude: during this Covid 19 time owner said- I don’t believe in this crap ( referring to wearing of masks)-I’m not sick so I don’t need one. Food: pancakes way to thick and tasteless. Price example: a sprinkle on cinnamon on 2 French Toast, $3.00. End of review.

This is a delightful place to sit indoors or out, complete with an unobstructed harbor view, and the breakfast offerings were simple but solid. They were closed the first day were were there, but we went back every day after that. Service was pleasant and fast.

Very efficient place serving up delicious food, with a great view if you get there early enough! The service was good, and we all loved our breakfasts. For a tourist town and the large portions, we found the prices to be very fair too. We definitely would eat here again.
