Food here is very good! Its not like what you would imagine your typical diner to be. On the other side it is very small space and space is limited.

There were five of us for lunch and by swinging a chair over the counter, we sat five at the booth. The menu varies from diner food to gourmet. One person ordered the eggplant and lamb stack - it was delicious. I had the fried clams and the clams were lightly battered and fried golden. The cole slaw was not... More

The A-1 is very eclectic in its offerings...we stuck with the basic cheeseburgers with blue-cheese,( my husband had swiss cheese) with hand cut fries...perect!

Saw this on the Diner's Drive ins and Dives show, so we went there on our vacation route. It was a diner, so that made it interestingly fun, on a bridge, in a cute town on the border of New Hampshire. But that's kind of where it stops. We ordered breakfast as it was a Sunday, and I think they... More

A most eclectic diner. I think this was once a Pullman car. The Sunday brunch is superbly inventive, especially the New Orleans bourbon french toast. Dinner entre's have a decidely Middle Eastern character.

This was my first meal after a 48 hour fast for an appointment at the nearby VA hospital. It did not disappoint, pork chop, mashed potatoes, and peas - perfect simplicity well prepared along with a fresh baked biscuit. All in all a very good meal indeed, in nice setting.

While traveling, we found ourselves near Gardiner at lunchtime.  After a quick peek at Trip Advisor, we decided upon A-1 Diner.  We were pleased with our decision.  Since we were in a diner, we chose to sit at the counter and order a burger and tuna melt.  Both were tasty.  The fries were also crisp and hot.  A great diner... This classic diner, located here in 1946 is a very popular eatery for both locals and tourists alike. Lines form outside for all three meals, so plan to be here in an off hour and you should get right in. The grill has been moved into a built-on kitchen in the back, but that is nearly the only change over... More

I have been driving by this place everyday while staying with my brother and had wanted to do Sunday brunch sometime. I just happened to be exploring Gardiner today and it didn't look busy so I stopped in even though it wasn't brunchtime. I ordered a kimchi bacon burger off the specials menu. It was really a great burger and... More

Well, it wasn't the A1 in 1954, but the classic diner hasn't physically changed one bit. It's been Heald's, then Wakefield's, now A-1. A-1 is an unusual combination of standard diner food, prepared very well, along with interesting, unusual gourmet or near-gourmet dishes as well. Sunday brunch specials are really very very creative. It's still a diner. There are 6... More
