Having traveled in Africa we were drawn to this simple family-run restaurant late on our first night in town. Wow! This is not a place for fine dining or special atmosphere, but if you want authentic East African dishes with a wonderful array of flavors and spices, this is worth the stop. The family running it could not have been... More

Just a couple blocks from Longfellow house, down a side street, sits this great little place, full of aromas that will make your mouth water before you order! Lovely personal service, excellent curry and vegetables, served on rice or injera, utensils available on request.

From the sidewalk, the wild animal decor behind the dusty glass, along with the unfamiliar dishes on the posted menu, intrigued us, so we decided to have lunch. The food sounded good; chicken, fresh veggies, a strange sounding bread, tea. When the waiter arrived with a plate of hot towels and asked us to wash, I suddenly felt like we... More

This restaurant stays open pretty late for the area -1030 ish. Food was tasty with a lot of variety and food groups. Salad was a special treat, and I liked the red lentils too. One of the only restaurants where I have seen the owner talk with customers and ask how the food was.

We visited Asmara for lunch. It is a very small, "hole-in-the-wall" sort of restaurant with just 8 or 9 tables and a small kitchen in the back, but don't be put off by its undistinguished appearance. It offers several wonderfully flavored meat and vegetarian stews, all served on a traditional thin, spongy flat bread made of teff flour. The traditional... More

My first taste of injera - the bread (made from teff) which serves as plate and utensils for eating the meal. We had a lamb selection with turmeric, and a creamy spinach. Lunch special seemed a good value and then the cakes to dip in maple syrup for dessert with African sweet tea. Very good!

Friendly owners, delicious authentic flavor, feels like you stepped into a corner restaurant in Africa, love that injera, the grain used as a base under the different sauces is gluten free!
