This place is a classic stop for Detroiter's and out of town visitors. It is especially popular late at night when a couple coneys just seems like the right thing to do.

Top-quality Dearborn Sausage Co. natural-casing hot dogs. American's exclusive chili. There is no other Coney Island in the entire metro-Detroit area (of the 300+) that comes anywhere close to American. I love coming home - this is always the first AND the last stop in town.

The best Coney Island in Detroit. Period. American Coney Island is still owned and run by the Keros family who started it a century ago. The hot dogs are made exclusively for them, as is their chili hot dog sauce. None of the chains or independent Coney Islands (almost all of whom use one of two local chili sauces) compares.

Celebrating our anniversary we took some friends that had never been here before after the R. Kelly Christmas concert. We arrived around midnight and seating was available. The problem came once the food was delivered. We ordered Wings, French Fries, Coney Dogs, Loose Coney, Chille Fries and a bowl of Chille. The waiter spilled Chille in the lap of one... More

Compared to Lafayette next door during a pregame stop before the Thanksgiving Day Detroit Lions game. Not as flavorful but lines are much shorter, probably for a reason. It wasn't bad, just not as good as Lafayette's.

There are many places to get a Coney island dog in Detroit - you might as well make the effort to get it from the best. Hard by its competition (Lafayette Coney Island) the two of them make up one of Detroit's legendary competitions. A couple of coney dogs, an order of chili cheese fries (no beans in the chili)... After watching all the food shows I decided to visit. The coney dog with everything was probably the best dog I have had in years. It had a nice snap, just the right amount of chili sauce, and white onion. It is worth the stop

From greeting to check-out - very friendly staff. First visit and they broke down the options (quite basic) and made us feel welcomed. We scored a table at the very corner at Lafayette with views of the intersection & architecture and felt like locals. Great hospitality guys!!

Have had far better hot dogs and chili from random street vendors or my own kitchen. Kind of pricey too for what you get. Would not be back

For the zoo location. Horrible servers, not personable at all. All they did was joke, laugh and swear. We bought a coney and chili cheese fries. Everything was cold. The bun was stale. They must have made the fries so long ago. The cheese didn't even melt on top. Do not go here! Waste of money, should have went to... More
