Portsmouth New Hampshire has become a destination get-away spot. No matter what time of year it is, this location has much to offer and things to do. If you are looking for great food in a nostalgic seaport building, be sure to give The River House a try. Located on the pier in downtown, the scenic view of the working... More

No seating available outside today as it was 17F. Two levels available with outside seating waters edge during the warmer season. The chowder was excellent but the lobster roll was not as sweet and tender as it could have been. The fried haddock and shrimp was pretty dry and our waitress didn't really check back which was disappointing as my... More

Have to try the chowder it's to die for really. It won awards no kidding. The fried seafood is not too greasy and the coating really light.

The best thing about this restaurant is the view. The food was very poor quality and way overpriced. I ordered the crab cakes, they were dripping with grease and tasted like they were frozen crab patties out of a bag. The lobster roll was too expensive for the quality of the food. The seafood chowder was not good & we... More

Not much open mid day on the water. We stopped and had seafood chowder ok but too much flour in the base. The small lobster roll was very small and not the hoped for sweetness in lobster. My wife's broiled haddock was dry and didn't seem fresh. Not a good seafood option.

although located in the heart of Bow Street/water front, this is a great local restaurant. Dependable and affordable. Food is great, atmosphere is pure Portsmouth with an amazing view. Bar Tenders friendly and pours generous. A great go to with a nicely balanced menu.

Nancy and I have been there before when we went to Portsmouth to see a play. It was recommended to us for the best seafood chowder. As it was put, "I grew up here and with out a doubt this is the best chowder I have ever tasted." She wasn't wrong, it was very tasty, creamy, thick and had seafood... More

This place has a nice view of the river and you can dine indoors or out. I don't recall what my son and husband ordered but we've been there a few times and always Ben happy with the food. I always order the fish chowder. It is New England style and delicious. I've had chowder in many restaurants and this... More

Food was excellent. There were so many things that I would have love to try on the menu but we are only in town for a few days so are planning on going back for lunch today. Everything we tried was excellent. The chowder is a must, shrimp & scallop and onion soup were great. We sat on the patio... More

Seriously great chowder. It's creamy and buttery, with huge chunks of fish, lobster and shrimp. Lob dog looked good, too! It was winter, so we stayed inside, but they seem to have a great patio with view of the water. There is a heated balcony, but I don't really like eating surrounded by plastic, so I stayed in the cozy... More
