This is a local's spot. If you really want genuine New Mexican, this is the joint. Anything with either kind of chili on it is good, and the sopapillas are money. If you're a fan of say Chili's, then this is not the place for you (but if that's the case, you're probably beyond help anyway). :)

Was looking forward to some good Mexican, or New Mexican food, asked two of the locals what the best restaurant would be and El Matador was the first response both times, so we went. Gotta say, nothing special here. The place looked clean but fairly boring, no atmosphere, more of a roadside cafe feel which is fine, but then the... More

This is a local's place in Raton, NM. No atmosphere, and the food was not very good. There was nothing particularly irritating about the service, but the food was just not appetizing. I'll skip this place next time I'm passing through Raton.

Desperate for a bite to eat between Albuquerque and Denver, we stopped at El Matador in Raton. Although the building looked a little decrepit, the food was good and the staff was very pleasant. During the week, they have a pie maker who has a good reputation, but, alas, we were there on a Saturday morning. We asked for really... More

Looking for a restaurant on Sunday afternoon while passing through Raton? Good luck--lots were closed for the day. We decided to try El Matador because we really like NM cuisine. It was in the top 3, if not the worst, meal we've ever eaten. We were seated quickly, greeted very nicely and drinks were brought right away. The chips appeared... More

We stopped here because the people that ran the campground we stayed at said the locals "seemed to like it". The service was good and they were pretty quick. The green chili was nice and spicy, and the homemade tortillas were very good. Frankly, that's what I should have ordered. I asked for a beef and bean burrito and a... More

We were all tired and were looking for some authentic Mexican food. We had chicken, beef, and cheese enchiladas, and a chili burger. Both the red and green chili were good. Sopapillas were served as the bread with the meal, and were huge!

Arrived at 7:30 with party of 10. Placed our order, then was advised they didn't have enough food. And we would have to leave, they were closing. The waitress were very rude. Would never recommend this restaurant. Since I was there only a short time, wasn't very clean.

We arrived at this restaurant after finding that most others were closed. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and beef burritos. There was absolutely NO cheese on any of the dishes! We ordered 3 beef burritos and they were very large, but were made with ground beef. A bummer... The green chili was very spicy but didn't seem to be homemade.... More
